Cavalier Polomen Defeat Cornell 5-0

By Robert Byron

Virginia's polo team began intercollegiate
play on Sunday with a
smashing 5-0 victory over ivy
League power Cornell captained by
Danny Ladd.

Led by Captain Rob Rinehart at
the number two position, Dave
Banks at number one, and "Gentleman"
John Cutler at number three,
the Cavalier malletmen were immensely
successful in blanking a
Red Raider team spiced with
international flavor. Playing with
Ladd were Pakistan's Tahir Ali,
and Colombia's Pablo Navas.

Rinehart, playing way above his
zero goal rating, accounted for two
goals, with Cutler pushing in two
more, one on a penalty shot.

Banks displayed excellent horsemanship
both at Scott Stadium on
Saturday afternoon and at Brook
Hill Farm on Sunday, and opened
up Virginia's scoring in the first
chukkar. Banks attracted Captain
Ladd's attention early in the match
and was heavily guarded throughout
the afternoon.

Captain Rinehart stated that
Virginia's task was made that much
more difficult by Cornell's unorthodox
play which consisted of shifting
positions and reckless horsemanship.

During the heated play of the
second chukkar, Ali's horse, seemingly
out of control, caused a
mishap, bringing down 2 horses and
2 riders. Both Cutler and Ali were
uninjured and play resumed with
Rinehart quickly taking the hit in
and passing to Banks, who proceeded
down the length of the
field, taking Ladd out of the play
and enabling Rinehart to move in
for Virginia's second goal. Scoring
in the second chukkar was concluded
with Cutler's foul shot making
the score 3-0.

Virginia's only score in the third
chukkar came when Cutler knocked
the ball in before being ridden off
the play.

The last tally came in the final
chukkar as Rinehart knocked in the
longest shot of the afternoon, a 40
yard, under the neck shot, which
closed out the scoring at 5-0.

With Sunday's victory, the Cavaliers
are hopeful of gaining their
first NCAA championship, however
they first must challenge Penn on
Sunday and then face last year's
champion, the Elis of Yale University,
one week from Sunday.
