Running Back Fred Kaspick Gets Yardage For Cavayearlings Against Home Opener Against VPI

UNC's freshman team, fresh
from a victory over the Wolfpack's
first-year team, face the undefeated
Cavayearlings this afternoon at 2
o'clock in Scott Stadium.

Carolina features a big quarterback,
Mike Mansfield, from Norfolk,
Va. At 6-0 and 200 pounds,
Mansfield has run the option well
and has an adequate passing arm.
Against N.C. State, he had 53 yards
rushing and completed three of ten
passes good for 46 yards.

Most of the UNC attack has
been centered around a pair of
strong halfbacks, Les Whitehorne
and Billy Hite. Whitehorne had 126
yards against State while Hite
collected 102. That win was made
possible by a big fourth quarter for
Carolina.

This attack should prove a tough
test for the young Wahoos who
held the freshman VPI offense
scoreless and stopped the baby
Terps in the second half for a 27-10
win.

For the past two years the
Cavayearlings have been luckless
against the Carolina freshmen, and
this year they will be depending on
a developing offense to do the
trick.

Virginia's starting quarterback
will probably be the lanky Bill
Troup. Troup has shown promise as
a passer, although the bulk of the
Cavayearlings' offense has come
from running backs Fred Kaspick
and Chuck Belle.

Last week against Maryland
Kaspick had a couple of good runs,
clipping off 22 and 48 yards for
touchdowns.

Any passes to be thrown could
go to the baby Wahoos' speedy
flanker, Alan Clements, 6-1, 185
pounds. Clements got into the
scoring column last week on a 21
yard pass from Troup.

If another quarterback is
needed, Coach Clay will probably
call on Rick Babula. Babula was
also on the scoring list against
Maryland.
