All-Second-Year Attack Has Been Led By Connor's Four Goals In Two Games; Ace Inside Broke 0-0 Tie With Overtime Tallie

Spearheaded by an airtight Cavalier
defense and a hustling Jay
Connor, who rammed in the winning
goal with four minutes remaining
in the second period of
overtime, Coach Gordon Burris'
soccer team upped their record to
2-0 Sunday afternoon with a 1-0
victory over the Tigers of Clemson.

Neither team was able to produce
a score during the four
quarters of regular play due to
some outstanding performance on
the part of both Virginia's and
Clemson's defenses. The Cavalier's
Danny Abramson and the Tigers'
Gary Pace were both brilliant in the
goal coming up with several crucial
saves.

Virginia had just missed on a
power break during the opening
seconds of the last overtime period
when the Cavalier offensive line
regained control of the ball and
inside forward Jay Connor pushed
in the only score of the afternoon
amidst a scramble about the Clemson
goal. Connor, a second-year
man with that uncanny sense of
where to be at the right time, has
accounted for four goals in the still
young '69 season.

Proud of having tallied his
second shutout in as many games,
Coach Burris was quick to credit his
defense for their hustle and desire.
"My new graduate assistants, Ian
Faulconer and Richard Lewis, are
responsible for the improvement on
the defense. They have played
better than last year."

Another highlight of the victory
over the Tigers as seen by Coach
Burris was the strong showing of his
young second line, which continually
threatened the Clemson goal
while their more experienced cohorts
gained some valuable rest on
the bench.

Goalie Danny Abramson was
one particular object of Coach
Burris' praise, for the Cavalier
tri-captain has skunked all opponents
so far this season despite an
unpredictable 'trick knee.'

The 1-0 decision was Clemson's
second setback this season, the first
coming at the hands of perennial
powerhouse Maryland by a score of
6-1.

Compared to this rout the
Cavaliers' 1-0 victory might seem
insignificant but the score could
have been more lopsided. Jay
Connor's winning goal was nearly
augmented by left winger' Fred
McGlynn; who booted a long shot
into an empty Tiger net just as the
final buzzer sounded.

The Clemson offense showed
excellent control of the ball in
midfield play, but they failed to
produce when the ball reached the
goal area. With a beautiful chance
to score on a cross from the left
wing with one minute left in
overtime play the Tigers' overanxious
center forward missed a
clear shot at the goal wide to the
left.

"It was one of the very best
games by a Virginia team of mine"
stated Coach Burris after the
contest on Sunday. The Cavaliers
will be shooting for their third
straight win to extend their perfect
record at Lexington against
Washington and Lee on Friday.
