Good Indians ... Dead Indians

Coach Lou Holtz thought about
his Indians' game with the Cavaliers
this Saturday at Cary Field and
surmised the situation, "we're two
steps ahead of the posse."

William and Mary faces a very
stern test as Coach Blackburn
organizes his posse to go hunting
for victory number two on the
season. Virginia goes into the game
a solid favorite, but according to
chief Injun Holtz, "We welcome the
challenge."

The Wahoos roll to historic
Williamsburg with much the same
lineup that ruined Duke last week.
Jim Lacy will start at tailback,
continuing to fill in for the injured
Dave Wyncoop.

A host of minor wounds
suffered in the Blue Devil game are
healing, and most of the regulars in
question will be ready to do a bit of
scalping Saturday. ACC lineman of
the week, Randy Lestky, will have
his hand cast cut off and will play.
Ends Tom Patton and Al Sinesky
will be going full tilt despite some
lingering brulses, and Bob Runngan
will roam the secondary, recovering
from a nagging back muscle pull.

The offense will once again
feature Danny Fassio at the helm.
Jim Lacey and Gabby Helman will
be running, while Chuck Mooser
heads up the corps of receivees
from his flanker position.

Jimmy Shannon and Dan Ryzek
bolster a fast improving offensive
line that is looking for a good
afternoon Saturday on Cary Field.
Coach Holtz will counter such
hopes with a pair of tough
linebackers - Wally Ake and Dave
Holland. Ake weighs 202, and
Holland hits the scales at 6-1 and
210 pounds.

Coach Holtz is wary of the
inexperience in his interior
offensive line, but is figuring on a
good performance from fullback
Joe Pilch. Pilch packs some power
from his 5-11, 215 pound frame
and has accounted for 196 yards of
Indian rushing for a 4.8 average.

The Indians will sport two
quarterbacks to direct the attack.
Jimmy Laylock does most of the
passing (12 completions and 154
yards), while Wes Meeteer keeps the
ball on the ground (91 yards and a
3.5 average).

As a lot of coaches tend to do,
Coach Lou Holtz is publicly
pessimistic of his Indians' chances
this weekend. "We haven't
progressed the way we had hoped,"
he simply stated.

George Blackburn is taking them
one at a time. "We can't afford to
gloat over Duke. W & M, based on
what we have seen in the movies
and from our scouting dope, is well
coached and a very aggressive
football team."

The Wahoos leave from
University Hall by bus at 1 p.m. A
workout in Williamsburg is set for
4, with the squad spending Friday
night at Heritage Inn.

Whether or not Virginia deserves
the label of "ACC contender" will
be a question answered in many
minds late Saturday afternoon. The
Wahoos probably came up with the
answer a while ago.
