Mittmen Drop Twin -Bill To Terps

Twenty games in the win
column is something of a magic
number in baseball, but it is a trick
for which the Cavaliers will have to
wait another season to master. A
visit to College Park, Maryland,
yesterday proved disastrous to
Coach Jim West's mittmen as they
dropped a twin bill to the Terps, 4-1
and 7-1.

The Cavaliers stand 18-14 with a
single game against Clemson, this
afternoon on Lambeth Field
providing the last of this season's
competition. Some strong hitting
from the Terrapins and some erratic
fielding on Virginia's part forced
the Cavaliers to abandon their bid
on a twenty game winning season.

Ed Kihm went the route for the
Cavaliers in the first game, giving up
four runs on two hits. Kihm,
striking out five and walking three,
suffered his second loss on the
season in six decisions.

The second game conjured up a
sum total of six Cavalier fielding
errors, a remarkable fact considering
Virginia had committed only two
errors in the five games previous to
yesterday's competition.

The Cavaliers mounted a
legitimate threat in the very first
inning, but their three singles and a
walk could not muster a score. The
strong arm of rightfielder Gene
Hiser picked off Robbin Marvin
making a wide turn off of first and
nabbed Bob Schultz at the plate
trying to score from second on a
Mike Cubbage single.

The Terps amassed four runs in
the bottom of the fifth to put the
game out of reach. Three singles, a
double, and another single off
Maryland bats ran the score to 7-1.

Today's game starts at 2 p.m. with
Rick Spigone doing the mound
work against the Tigers of Clemson,
South Carolina.
