Lose 8-2, Win 8-0

Baseballers Split

By Davis Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Virginia's baseball team bounced
back from an 8-2 loss to take the
second game of a doubleheader
with South Carolina 9-0 yesterday
afternoon.

Rick Spigone, breaking Cavalier
season records for most appearances
(14) and most complete
games (7), authored the four-hit
shutout.

Joel DeBoe put the first Cavalier
runs on the scoreboard in the
second inning when he tripled
down the right-center power alley
to drive home Mike Cubbage, who
had walked. DeBoe then came in on
an error.

Virginia scored again in the
bottom of the third. Reliefer Larry
Erbaugh walked DeBoe and then
gave up a blooping Texas Leaguer
to center by Steve Bryant to put
men on first and third. Then
Cubbage bounced a single through
the second-baseman to drive in the
third run. DeBoe followed with a
two-run single to right. Arnie
Marzullo relieved for the
Gamecocks to end the inning.

Dave Counts, who last weekend
snuck up on the record books with
his sixth and seventh doubles of the
season to tie for second place on
the all time list, began the scoring
in the fourth. He lofted a 1-1 pitch
over the left field fence to the
railroad trestle for his second
round-tripper this year. Pitcher
Spigone, who sometimes pinch-hits,
followed with a 370 foot ground
rule double to center.

After the Gamecock manager
yanked Marzullo in favor of Phil
Houston, Robbin Marvin beat out
the throw to first for an infield hit.
Then Buzzy Schultz beat out a high
chopper to load the bases.

With Bryant up Spigone scored
on a wild pitch. Then Bryant
tripled to deep center, driving in
both runs and giving him six triples
on the year. Gary Lance came on in
relief and, after loading the bases,
retired the side.

Spigone, with defensive help
such as a great over-the-shoulder,
running catch of a line drive in deep
center by Bryant, held the
Gamecocks hitless the last three
frames to record his sixth win in
ten decisions.

In the first game South Carolina
gained the advantage in the first
inning with an unearned run.

The Gamecocks put the game
away in the top of the second.
Ronnie Fulmer began the four run
barrage by poling a high home run
to right. Then South Carolina
converted two walks, a stolen base,
a single and Billy Cash's double to
score three more runs before a
flyout ended the inning.

Adding two runs in the fifth on
three walks and a single the
Gamecocks never were seriously
threatened as the ACC cellar
dwellers won their eleventh game in
29 starts.

Dave Counts started the Cavalier
rally in the third. When the catcher
dropped his third strike he ran to
first and then took second when
the catcher threw the ball in the dirt
and it got by the first-baseman.
After a pop-up Robbin Marvin lined
over the second-baseman's head for
the Cavaliers' first hit to drive in
Counts. Buzzy Schultz then
reached base on a throwing error.
But, though he was knocked over
by the drive, hurler Jimbo Smith
caught Steve Bryant's liner for the
third out.

Mike Cubbage opened the
fourth with a home run to right, his
second, to score the Cavaliers' other
run.

Lou Paulson followed with a
sharp single up the middle. Next
Counts reached on an error of his
blooper by the centerfielder, but
Virginia wasted the opportunity as
the next three batters made outs.

Robbin Marvin, lead-off batter
for the first time, led the two game
attack with four hits in six trips to
raise his average to .372.
