Virginia Just Swept Twin-Bill From North Carolina State, Runner-Up For NCAA Championship Last Year, To Take Fourth In ACC
North Carolina's league
leading baseball team snapped a
four game Cavalier winning streak
Saturday with a 5-0 win in Chapel
Hill. The loss followed a twin-bill
sweep of North Carolina State the
day before and left Virginia's
record at 17-11, 7-8 in the ACC.
In downing the Wolfpack 4-3
and 7-6 Friday the Cavaliers
reached the dizzy heights of the
first division. State fell to 7-8 and
15-10 to replace the Cavaliers in
fifth place. Obligingly the Wolfpack
lost to Maryland 7-5 Saturday so
the Cavaliers still have at least a tie
for fourth.
Ed Kihm went the distance in
the opener as the Cavaliers took
advantage of a robust hitting attack
and five State errors. Despite 12
hits three of Virginia's four runs
were unearned.
Kihm, whose record now stands
4-1, and a flawless defense yielded
five hits. One of the hits was a
two-run homer by Darrell Moody in
the fourth.
The Cavaliers fell behind by 3-2
in the fourth on Moody's blast. But
they knotted the score in the fifth
when Mike Cubbage doubled and
came home on a throwing error.
Virginia scored its winning run
in the sixth. With one away Buzzy
Schultz drew a walk. Then Robbin
Marvin singled to left and, when the
ball slipped by Gary Yount, Schultz
raced home to score.
In the seven inning nightcap
hurler Dan Merchak relieved with
the bases full and two away in the
sixth after the Wolfpack had scored
four runs to slice the deficit to one,
7-6. Merchak retired Moody on a
fly ball to center and set State
down in order in the seventh to
record a save.
Jan Luse was the starting hurler
and held the Wolfpack to just four
hits and two runs in five innings.
But after giving up a walk and a hit
in the sixth he was yanked in
of Dave Greer.
Greer retired two men but, in
between, walked four and
committed a balk. His wildness,
plus a throwing error by the
catcher, allowed the Wolfpack to
tally four runs before Merchak
entered the game. Luse received
credit for the victory, his first this
year, victory, his first this year.
Virginia gained the lead early
with a two run uprising in the first.
After being held for two innings the
Cavaliers exploded for five runs to
seal the Wolfpack's fate and send
and losing hurler Robby
the showers.
Dunlap scattered five hits,
two doubles, to snap the
Cavaliers' winning streak. Rick
Spigone gave up eight hits in going
the route and absorbing his fourth
loss against five wins.
The Tar Heels gave Dunlap, a
junior right-hander from Chapel
Hill, all the cushion he needed in the
first. Following a walk and a double
Skip Hull delivered his sixth home
run of the year to left center for a
3-0 lead.
Virginia has only five games
remaining, including four home
games. On Tuesday they host South
Carolina's Gamecocks at 1:30 on
Lambeth Field.
