Mittmen Dump VPI,
Take Championship

Virginia claimed the state baseball
championship yesterday by
defeating VPI 1-0 in the bottom of
the ninth inning.

Rick Spigone was the winning
pitcher for the Cavaliers, upping his
record to 5-3. In the process he
struck out seven, walked one, and
allowed only two hits.

The Gobblers have been currently
ranked tenth in the nation with a
24-3 record and previously had not
been shut out and never held to
under six hits.

The climax of the game came in
the bottom of the ninth. Steve
Bryant got a base hit to center
field. Mike Cubbage, the second
hitter, beat out a bunt for a base
hit. Next, Lou Paulson's hit forced
Bryant out at third.

Bill Judkins then struck out.
The Tech coach decided to put in
another pitcher who promptly
walked David Counts. Spigone
came up to bat and played the
crucial role that he had had a part
in all afternoon.

The Gobblers' first baseman
could not handle Spigone's tricky
ground ball and the error allowed
Cubbage to cross the plate with the
winning run.

Earlier in the top of the eight
inning, Tech had been prevented
from scoring by some fine field
play by the Cavaliers. First-year
man Robbin Marvin made some
outstanding catches to stymie VPI's
attack.

From the third inning until the
eight, Spigone retired 16 straight
and in general kept the Techmen
off balance with his variation of
pitches. The third-year hurler managed
to lower his earned run
average to 2.21 with the performance.

Spigone's Gobbler counterpart,
Johnny Foster saw his record
lowered to 4-2, but because the
Cavalier's one run was not earned,
his earned run average is still an
outstanding 1.00.

For the game, Virginia had one
run on four hits, one error, and left
nine on base.

VPI had two hits, one error, and
left four on base.

Steve Bryant continues to lead
the Virginia mittmen in hitting with
an average of .333 after an off
afternoon when he went only one
for four.

The Cavaliers, now 5-7 in the
ACC, hit the conference trail again
Friday with a doubleheader at N. C.
State and then a single game with
UNC at Chapel Hill on Saturday.
