Stickmen Trounce Duke

The Cavalier lacrosse express
rolled on yesterday with a
convincing 16-1 rout of Duke in
Durham. The hapless Blue Devils
never had a prayer as the mighty
Wahoos scored in every period and
limited their opponents to a single
second period tally.

The Cavaliers, ranked sixth in
the nation following their
heartbreaking loss to Navy, were

led by Jay Conner, who outplayed
the entire Duke contingent by
himself, scoring five goals and
assisting on another in a
tremendous display of offensive
prowess.

Conner, however, did not carry
the Wahoo scoring load by himself,
for Doug Tarring scored three times
and Bob Nicosia slammed home
two more, as Virginia rolled up its
biggest offensive output of the
season.

The Wahoos scored two quick
first period goals, and were never
seriously threatened thereafter, as
they held a commanding 7-1 lead at
intermission, and then proceeded to
nail the lid on the Duke coffin with
nine second half goals.

The victory gave the Cavaliers a
6-2 overall record and upped their
conference slate to 2-0, while
Duke's record fell to 5-4. The win
also sets up a showdown battle for
the ACC title with Maryland's
tough Terrapins, also nationally
ranked and unbeaten in the
conference. The Wahoos journey to
College Park this Saturday for what
could be the season's most
significant contest of the season.

Steve Nauss, Jim Potter, and
Dennis Pushkin also joined in the
scoring, and helped to make the
afternoon a long one for the Blue
Devils and their fans.
