Oarsmen Own 14-4 Record Overall After All Three Boats Placed Well In The Citadel's Invitational

Unaccustomed to the menacing
two-foot swells of Charleston Bay,
Virginia's crew was edged out by
Rollins College in the Southern
Championships on Saturday. The
Rollins crew finished only three
seconds ahead of the Cavaliers.

Although outweighed by an
average of 195 pounds to 175
pounds, the Virginia crew
demonstrated some superior
teamwork by stroking its way to a
second-place finish in front of East
Carolina, Jackson, Alabama,
Florida Southern, and VCU.

The Cavalier crew — consisting
of Harrison O'Connor at stroke,
Bob Tuke at seven, Jack Plackter at
six, Tom Lincoln at five, Steve Platt
at four, Pete Luke at three, Rich
Davisson at two, and Jon Woodall
at the bow — were "disappointed"
in their fourth setback against
fourteen victories.

However, the Cavaliers will have
an opportunity to avenge the loss
on calmer waters this weekend in
the Washington Invitational and
City Championships. With
Georgetown University favored to
finish first, Virginia should run a
close second ahead of Rollins,
George Washington, and Howard.

In the JV Southern
Championship races the Cavaliers
met an equally unfortunate fate as
they crossed the finish line only
two seconds behind the Rollins
Junior Varsity. The strong
headwind and high swells prevented
the crews from recording any
outstanding times, as the freshman
crew was the only Virginia
representative in the winner's circle.
