Mittmen Nip USC,
Lose To Clemson

Running into their first Atlantic
Coast Conference competition this
past weekend, Coach Jim West's
Cavaliers emerged with one win
and two losses.

Robbin Marvin, who entered the
game in the eighth inning at
shortstop, doubled home the winning
run in the tenth inning to give
Virginia its first ACC victory, 4-3
over South Carolina. The win, in
salvaging the last game of a three
game trip through South Carolina,
brought Virginia's overall record to
9-5.

In the tenth of the Gamecock
game Terry Dan reached base on an
error. He was then sacrificed to
second by Lou Paulson, thus setting
up Marvin's game winning two base
hit.

Rick Spigone, who had replaced
Ed Kithm on the mound in the
tenth, received credit for the
victory. Dan Marzula, the third
USC pitcher, was the loser.

In giving the Gamecocks
their third ACC loss in as many
starts the Cavaliers were led by Joel
DeBoe, who had two of Virginia's
six hits. Butch Anderson and
Buddy Caldwell each had a pair of
South Carolina's six hits.

On Friday, the day before, the
Cavaliers had dropped both ends of
a doubleheader in their ACC debut,
12-5 and 9-3 to Clemson.

In the first game Dave Van
Volkenburg, a southpaw, scattered
nine hits to post his fifth victory in
seven starts. Spigone was the
starting and losing hurler for the
Cavaliers. Dave Greer relieved
him in the third and, in turn, was
relieved by Jan Luse in the fifth.

Leading the Tigers' hitting barrage
were Don Russell and Eddie
Dixon with three hits apiece. Two
of Russell's hits were triples while
Dixon had! One triple and three
runs batted in. Calvin Weeks and
Rick Young homered for Clemson.

Steve Bryant led the Cavaliers
with three hits, including a home
run. He also had three RBI. Mike
Cubbage added two hits to the
attack.

In the second seven inning game
southpaw Rusty Gerhardt ran his
record to 5-0 with a five hit effort
over the Cavaliers. He struck out
four and walked five while Virginia
could manage only two earned
runs.

Brad Jordan, who was relieved
in the fifth by Dick Witt, was
tagged with the loss.

Clemson's hitters, who only
mustered nine hits of their own,
were led by Russell again. The
junior Tiger stroked a bases loaded
home run in the fifth. Robbin
Marvin drove in two Virginia runs
with a double.

Coach West's Cavaliers next play
this Thursday when they travel to
Durham, North Carolina for a
twin-bill with Duke University.
