Linksmen Win,
Lose Matches

Opening the spring season in the
Palmetto State, the Virginia golfers
bowed to the University of South
Carolina, 4-17, on Tuesday, before
rebounding against Clemson the
next day with a 16½-4½ triumph.

Number six man, Britt Stenson,
led Butch Slaughter's Cavaliers,
recording an even-par 72 and a 3-0
win over the Gamecocks' John
Dennis. Ben Greene was second
only to Stenson for point-getting
honors. Playing in the number two
position, Greenberg's fine 73 strike
effort was in vain against Richard
Tinsley's 70 stroke total for South
Carolina.

Paul Samanchik garnered the
other point for the Cavaliers via his
2-1 loss to Hap Lathrop, Samanchik
led after the front nine with a
one-over 37, but Lathrop, with
three birdies on the back nine,
came from behind to take the
match.

Bubba Victor and Robert Dunn
shot a 75 and a 78, respectively,
but in losing causes to the
accomplished Gamecocks.

Travelling westward, the
Cavaliers stayed at Clemson just
long enough to post a 16½-4½
victory. Every Cavalier golfer kept
his score in the 70s, a feat earning
the Virginia team win number one
on the season.

Paul Samanchik led all golfers
with a low of 70. His one under par
round included four birdies as he
soundly whipped Clemson's Ben
Sullivan, 3-0.

Bubba Victor finished well for
the Cavaliers with a 73, posting a
3-0 win over the Tigers' Doug
Roper. Daryl Neiliwocki aided the
cause, picking up three points from
Clemson's Allan Carroll.

Bunn Greenberg fired a 75 and
Robert Dunn chalked up a 78 to
add to the Virginia margin of
victory.

The Cavalier golfers return to
Charlottesville and the Keswick
Country Club course Friday,
hosting the VMI Keydets and the
VPI Giant Gobbler in a triangular
match. The Keydets may not offer
the strenuous competition that VPI
undoubtedly will provide. Billy
Herbert, one of the state's better
golfers, will be leading the Gobbers
in an attempt to repeat last year's
decision over the Cavaliers. Tee-off
time at Keswick Friday afternoon is
at 1:30.
