Carolina Edges
Davidson

Second team all-American
Charlie Scott gave UNC a last
second win over Davidson, 87-85,
to give the Tar Heels their third
straight NCAA Eastern Regional
championship. The win came on an
18 foot jump shot with two
seconds left in the game.

Scott's performance was good
for a game total of 32 points, 23 of
which came in the second half. The
win entitles North Carolina to go
on to face Purdue Thursday night
in Louisville.

Davidson's Wildcats had fought
hard throughout the game and it
looked as if they might win it.
Davidson's second team
all-American Mike Maloy tried hard
to keep up with Scott but fell short
in the waning minutes of the game.

UNC was playing without the
services of their star backcourt
man, Dick Grubar, who sustained
an injury in the ACC Tournament
championship game with Duke. It
evidently hurt them as Davidson
was able to stay right with the Tar
Heels exchanging leads time and
time again.

Fouls played a big role in the
first half as Carolina's big men, Lee
Dedmon and Rusty Clark, had
drawn four and three respectively
before intermission came.

Regardless of the disadvantage,
however, UNC took a 47-46
halftime lead. Substitute Gerald
Tuttle made this possible by taking
a jumper from the corner with 14
seconds left in the half. But the Tar
Heels owed their first half effort
mainly to Bill Bunting who had
managed 18 points.

Coming out after intermission,
however, Charlie Scott took over.
Carolina rallied to a lead of six
points with goals by Scott and
Clark. Then Davidson came back to
hit on 10 straight points to put
UNC down by four. From then on
out it was nip and tuck with the
lead being exchanged every few
baskets.

With 4:28 left to play Clark
pushed Carolina ahead, 80-79.
Maloy hit and then Scott hit to
make it 82-81, UNC. Kroll then put
Davidson ahead. The Wildcats'
Doug Cook took the ball down and
drove in for a lay-up. The basket
counted but he was called for a
charging foul and left the game
with five fouls.

UNC's Jim Delany made good
on the foul shot and Scott tied the
score 85 all. Scott fouled O'Neill
but O'Neill missed the free throw.
Maloy rebounded and passed to
Kroll who charged UNC's Eddie
Fogler. With 1:05 remaining
Carolina went into their four corner
offense and then set up Scott for
the winning shot.

UNC's high scorers were Bunting
with 22, and Scott with 32.
Davidson's Mike Maloy hit for 25
points while Doug Cook made 18.
