Cagers Host Wake;
UNC, USC Upset

By Bruce Franzel

Virginia's basketball encounter
with Wake Forest, scheduled for
last Saturday night, was postponed
when the Demon Deacons' airplane
was snowed in at the
Winston-Salem airport. The game
has been rescheduled for tonight at
eight o'clock.

While Virginia remained idle on
Saturday, there were two amazing
upsets taking place in the ACC.
Duke downed the second ranked
team in the nation, North Carolina,
87-81 and N.C.State shocked South
Carolina, 67-64.

Because both Duke and
N.C.State won, there is a possible
three way tie for third place in the
conference, with North Carolina
and South Carolina having already
sewn up the first and second spots
respectively.

Virginia, having a firm hold on
the sixth place position in the ACC
regardless of the outcome of
tonight's game, will face the third
place finisher. If Wake wins tonight
however, they will flip a coin with
Duke and State to see who plays
the Cavaliers in the Conference
Tournament.

Maryland and Clemson, having
finished the season with identical
2-12 conference records, are
deadlocked for the cellar position in
the league.

In the televised contest on
Saturday, sophomore Dick
DeVenzio and senior Steve
Vandenberg led Duke in tearing
apart the usually solid North
Carolina defense. Vandenberg, who
spent most of the season in reserve,
tallied 33 points including a 13 for
13 record from the foul stripe.

Duke led at halftime, 46-33, but
in the game of sudden rallies, the
Tar Heels opened the second period
with 11 straight points, holding the
Blue Devils scoreless for four
minutes, 11 seconds.

Junior Charlie Scott led UNC
once again in the scoring column,
tallying 22 points in the loss. Dick
Grubar scored 16, followed by Bill
Bunting with 15.

It was a highly emotional game
for the Blue Devils because it was
the last regular season game for
coach Vic Bubas. Before the game
the Durham crowd gave Bubas a
standing ovation for several
minutes. It was the 100th home
game for the coach and the victory
made his ten year home court
record 87-13.

Following the victory Bubas
said, "This has to be a big one,
especially when you know it's your
last one."
