Set Nine Pool Records

Tankmen Splash State Meet

By Hugh Antrim
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Adair Pool in Williamsburg does
not usually provide the excitement
that fair Charlottesville offers on a
"big weekend," but this past
weekend proved to be a rewarding
exception for the Virginia mermen.

Setting no fewer than nine pool
records and seven new school
marks, the swimmers amassed a
total point outlay of 184. The most
that second place William & Mary
could muster was just 97 points.

Coach Ralph Law was obviously
pleased with the efforts of his team
in capturing the State Meet., and he
attributed this success to the
assumption that the mermen were to
be cast as favorites. Mr. Law
explained that "everybody got up
for it" realizing that they did
indeed have a shot at the State title.

The Cavaliers will need just as
impressive a performance when
they participate in the annual ACC
swimming tourney this weekend.
The Virginia swimmers take with
them an 8-2 dual meet record and
the state title against the powerful
ACC squads. N.C. State is favored
to win the competition, with
Maryland and North Carolina not
far behind. Coach Law rates his
mermen a choice for fifth in the
tournament.
