Phi Gam, SAE
Fight For Lead
Still not much can be said about
this year's struggle for IM
basketball superiority. Right now
the contenders look to be Phi Gam,
ATO, Zete, and SAE. However,
some surprises could materialize.
In action last Thursday night
League A leader, Phi - Gam,
walloped a faltering Delta Sig,
46-21. The Fiji's greatly outsized
their opponents and outplayed
them on both the offensive and
defensive boards. High scorer for
the game was Phi Gam's Bill Buck
who collected 20 points.
PiKa came back from their first
game loss and smothered the
luckless Sigma Phis, 60-26. Chuck
Spaid was the big gun for Pika
scoring 16 points in what turned
out to be no contest at all.
The Sigma Chis preserved their
perfect 2-0 record as they
outscored a winless Theta Delt,
36-25. Tom Wilson led the Sigma
Chis attack hitting for 14 points.
Jim Merriman had 21 points in
Beta's 41-25 triumph over TKE to
finish out the League A
competition.
In one of the higher scoring
matches of the night in League C
action, Chi Phi did it to ZBT,
64-51.
Dan Rubin turned in an
outstanding performance of 23
points for the Zebes, but George
Burns held the Chi Phis out in front
with his 17 markers.
ATO coasted to an easy win
over St. Elmo, 59-36, to post a 2-0
record. Scoring honors went to
ATO's Steve Raville with 15 points.
DU dumped Kappa Sig in a lop
sided contest, 59-31. DU presented
a balanced attack with the high
scorer, Frank Poole, hitting for 11
points.
Zete continued to dominate
League D competition, trouncing
Phi Sig by 59-44. Tony Conway
and Abby Salinger combined to
pace the Zetes in scoring. Conway
hit for 13 while Salinger collected
15. The Phi Sigs were not to be
outdone as Bob Berry scored 16
points and Terry Anderson, 14 in
their losing effort.
In the closest match of the
evening Sigma Nu and Phi Kap
fought it out in a tough one with
Sigma Nu emerging on top, 46-41.
However, the Nus had to win after
the buzzer in an overtime period.
Phi Psi routed the winless Pi
Lambda 68-27 in a game that
seemed to last an eternity.
To round out the League D
contests, PEP managed a 49-34
victory over arch rival SAM. Bob
Fagin led PEP with a 19 point
performance while SAM had two
leading scorers, Harry Lauder and
Felix Martin, who turned in 12
points a piece.
There will be more action in the
close confines of Memorial Gym
tonight as the third round of the IM
basketball battle for supremacy
continues.
