Cavayearlings
Split Contests

Big Scott McCandlish, dominating
both backboards as if he were
the only man on the court, led the
Cavayearlings to an 89-66 victory
over the Rats of VMI last Thursday
in Lexington.

The 6′10″ center blocked several
shots, pulled down 28 rebounds
and scored 25 points to help snap a
two game losing streak.

In the words of Coach Dick
DiBiaso the Cavayearlings "put it
all together early in the first half"
to build a quick lead. With McCandlish
and Frank Dewitt controlling
the defensive backboards the Chip
Miller- Tim Rash-Tom Bagby combination
worked to perfection and
the Cavayearlings ran up a 15 point
advantage, 35-20, with six and a
half minutes left. Then a furious
flurry of baskets from the outside
shooting of the Rats' Jerry Renfro
and Rick Bolus, along with a one-and-one
foul situation, quickly
brought the Keydets within two,
41-39, by halftime.

But the Rat rally was short lived
as the First-Year Men edged out a
six point lead, and then exploded
for eleven straight points for a
62-45 margin after the intermission.
The Keydets could get no closer
than ten points in the remaining
eleven minutes as they lost their
fifth game in thirteen decisions.

Frank Dewitt scored seventeen
points and gathered in thirteen rebounds.
Chip Miller, playing in his
home town against the school his
father was southern Conference
Coach-of-the-Year for, scored eighteen
points while Tim Rash and
Tom Bagby spiced the attack with
13 and 14 points, respectively.

Two days later in University
Hall it was a different story. Some
timely lay-ups by Charley Blank
and Jay Flowers saved an 83-75
decision for the Baby Terrapins of
Maryland.

Down 56-30 at halftime, the
Cavayearlings opened up the second
half with a full court press and a
disciplined attack to pull within
sight at 69-61 on a 20 foot jump
shot from the left of the key by
Miller. Then Tim Rash, who had
sparked the amazing comeback
with fourteen second half points
and three assists, fouled out with
about five minutes left. Dicky
Fletcher did a creditable job as
Rash's substitute but the Baby
Terps regained their composure and
managed to stave off repeated Cavayearling
threats. Thrice more the
First-Year Men closed the deficit
to eight and twice to seven, the last
coming with 47 seconds left, but
they could not pull off a win.

In winning for the eleventh time
in fourteen decisions the Rangy
Baby Terps fashioned their 26
point halftime lead on some truly
phenomenal shooting and aggressive
backboard control. Dewitt, shooting
seventy percent, hit for fourteen
points and McCandlish
dropped in twelve to keep the
Cavayearlings in the game during
the first half.

McCandlish tied the Terps'
Blank for scoring honors with 24
points but led the field in rebounds
with 17. Dewitt made eleven of 18
field goal attempts and one foul
shot for 23 points and also grabbed
ten rebounds.

The Cavayearlings, now 8-4, engage
the Blue Devil Frosh of Duke
prior to the varsity game Monday
night in Durham tonight.
