Gibson Boys Hope To Snap Losing Streak Saturday Against Terps

Chesley Productions has the
distinct privilege of televising
tomorrow's contest in University
Hall between the Cavaliers and the
visiting Maryland Terps. Unable to
offer tube fans the coveted NBC
peacock, Mr. Chesley and his crew
do promise a better game than the
Southern Conference affair on the
next channel, and furthermore it's
in living color.

Back on January 30 the
Cavaliers nipped Maryland, 78-77,
in College Park. Chip Case was at
that time just breaking back into
the lineup after his knee injury, and
Virginia was on the verge of
grabbing hold of a first division
slot. Since that time Coach
Gibson's hard-luck crew has bowed
three times, the last two defeats by
just four points.

The Cavaliers now stand in a
somewhat precarious position as to
the ACC standing. A 4-5 mark puts
the cagers in fifth place, behind N.
C. State with a 5-4 record and Duke
at 6-5. Maryland, on the other
hand, is firmly entrenched in the
conference cellar, burdened with a
1-10 record.

Maryland comes to
Charlottesville fresh off loss number
15, the latest at the hands of the
Navy Middies, 72-68. One shining
light for the Terrapins on an
otherwise dismal evening was Will
Hetzel. Hetzel, a 6-7 forward,
plagued the Midshipmen with a 37
point performance.

Peter Johnson, the only senior
starter on the team, carries the label
of playmaker for the Terps. A
consistent double figure performer,
Johnson teams with Hetzel for the
bulk of the scoring punch. With
Johnson in the backcourt is Mickey
Wiles, a transfer letterman from
Georgia.

Cavaliers Norm Carmichael,
John Gidding, and Mike Wilkes will
once again be called upon to
control the boards. The unenviable
task of defensing Will Hetzel will go
to one, if not all three of these
men.

Coach Gibson will undoubtedly
be utilizing all of his guards-Case,
Kinn, English, and Kennelly-in
hopes of finding a combination that
can snap the Cavaliers' three game
losing streak. In the first outing
against the Terps, both Kinn and
Kennelly scored in double figures.
Case was recuperating, and English
was good for six points and four
rebounds.

Maryland is indeed sweeping the
cellar of the ACC, but the Terps
almost put it all together in Cole
Field house, before bowing to the
Cavaliers by one point. Virginia
needs this one badly; a victory
would put the roundballers back up
to .500 in the ACC and overall and
would and preserve a lingering shot
at an elusive first division finish.
Game time Saturday afternoon is at
2-turn off the television and go.
