Runners Start
Winter Season
By Mike DeCamps
A sparkling mile relay quartet,
and a star long jumper should
provide most of the excitement and
much of the recognition for the
Virginia trackmen this winter, as
the runners prepare to open the
indoor season this Friday in
Washington.
The mile relay team, led by
Dick and John Morris, will seek the
relay title in the D. C. Invitational
Friday night. Saturday night a host
of Virginia thinclads will compete
in the Chesterfield Jaycee Meet in
the Richmond Arena.
Later in the season, Mike
Harvey, the conference indoor
champ and fifth in the NCAA
indoor meet last winter, will seek
trophies in the long jump and triple
jump in a number of big
invitational meets.
Running in the same division as
the Virginia team Friday night, will
be Pittsburgh, Iona, and perennially
tough William & Mary. Jim
Creekman and Roger Calvert will
round out the quartet that last year
hit times under 3:25 consistently.
Saturday in Richmond, a
number of individuals will seek
titles. Ron Shorb and Mike Gamble
will compete in the 50 yard dash
which should have William and
Mary's Mike Fratkin as a favorite.
Eddie Campbell: and John Heagle
will participate in the 50 yard high
hurdles in which Duke's Jeff
Howser will be a likely choice to
win.
Rick Katz and Craig Garder will
run the two mile for the Cavaliers
against a number of top
competitors including Duke's Ed
Stenberg and Georgetown's Steve
Stageburg. Virginia will also enter a
two mile relay team that will face
one of the South's best, the
University of Florida quartet.
On tap for the track team after
exams will be the VMI Relays in
the Lexington Fieldhouse,
February 1, the Virginia State
Meet, February 8, and a dual meet
with VMI, February 20.
