Hot—Shooting Cavaliers Upset Duke
With Second Half Surge, 81-75

It doesn't really seem possible,
but before last night's game with
Duke, Virginia had not beaten the
Blue Devils since the 1958-59
season. The streak is broken. The
Cavaliers outplayed, outhustled,
and outrebounded Duke to pull off
the upset of the young basketball
season last night, with a surprisingly
easy 81-75 victory before 4,300
fans in University Hall.

Duke opened the scoring in the
first half as center Randy Denton
got the initial field goal with only
four seconds gone in the game. It
seemed as if the Blue Devils were
going to make the Cavaliers their
fourth victim of the season, but
John Gidding came right back to
even the score at two all.

Then the ninth ranked Blue
Devils turned the ball over to the
Cavaliers, and Tony Kinn started
hitting. The six-foot guard, off
form in his first two games,
pumped in one shot from 20 feet,
then another 20-footer, and then a
third consecutive bucket from 23
feet out to make the score 8-2
Virginia.

To top it off, he added two foul
shots to give the Cavaliers an eight
point bulge with less than three
minutes gone. Mike Wilkes added
another two points, but Denton
stopped the streak with a foul toss.

Kinn and Duke's Dave Golden
traded baskets to keep the Cavaliers
in their eight point lead, but Vic
Bubas brought Rick Katherman off
the bench and the 6-7 sophomore
responded by hitting two clutch
baskets to reduce the Virginia lead
to four. John Gidding, who seemed
to be all over the court, grabbing
rebounds and scoring points, put in
a layup on a fine pass from Buddy
Reams.

Here again Katherman came to
the Duke rescue. He stuck in a foot
shot, then scored on two jump
shots in a row to give Duke its first
lead since the opening seconds of
the ball game, 26-23. Steve
Vandenberg scored on a short
jumper, and Mr. Katherman pushed
in a 23 foot shot to give the Blue
Devils a 30-23 advantage with seven
minutes left in the half.

It looked like the hollering was
all over for the Wahoo fans, but
John Gidding closed the gap to
32-31 with an amazing string of
four straight buckets. Scores by
Denton, Lind, and Golden upped
the Duke lead to seven, but Reams
stuck in a jump shot, Gidding
added two free throws and a layup,
and after C.B. Claiborne scored his
first goal of the night, Norm
Carmichael sent the Cavaliers into
the locker room all even at 41-41
on a short jumper with only two
seconds left in the half.

The second half was just as
exciting as the first. Wilkes and
Kinn opened a four point spread
before Vandenberg retaliated with a
15-foot jumper from the left side to
close the margin to two, 45-43.

That was the closest the Blue
Devils would ever come because
Virginia simply kept the pressure
on throughout the second half.
Goals by Kinn and Wilkes and
another foul toss by Kinn after he
was fouled by Dick DeVenzio, his
fourth of the evening gave Virginia
their biggest margin of the
night, 70-58 with 7:20 to go in the
game.

Duke came to within six, 76-70
on a jumper by Claiborne, but
Wilkes and Carmichael came right
back with two layups to ice the
game at 80-71. Reams closed out
the Virginia scoring on a foul toss
and Katherman collected his 22nd
and 23rd points of the evening on a
long jumper before the final buzzer
sounded to make the final score
Virginia 81 and Duke 75.

The win has to be called a team
effort even though Kinn had a great
shooting night hitting for 29 points.
Gidding played another outstanding
game getting 15 points and 13
rebounds. Wilkes finished second
high for the Wahoos with 19 and
Carmichael chipped in with 10.
John English only had three points
but played an outstanding floor
game while limiting sharp shooting
DeVenzio to a mere 6 points.
