In Season Opener

Cavaliers Upend Tech

By Hugh Antrim
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The Blacksburg Hokies would
have needed an inner tube and an
outboard motor to have beaten the
Virginia swimmers yesterday in
Memorial Gym. No such aids were
available, however, and the
Cavaliers blasted Tech by the
lopsided score of 71-33.

Coach Ralph Law was obviously
pleased with his team's effort and
expressed surprise at the Gobblers'
poor showing. Ho said that Tech
was simply "not in condition", and
noted this as a probable cause for
their weak performance.

It seems that Virginia Tech's
regular swimming coach is a
member of the football coaching
staff, and that he has not been able
to devote his full attention to his
swimmers due to the upcoming
Liberty Bowl.

Two Virginia records fell the
wayside during the course of th
afternoon. The first came in the
1,000 yard freestyle, (and 1,000
yards in the Memorial Gym puddle
pool is 40 lengths.) Alex Shaw, a
first-year man, raced through this
distance in 11:58.4. The second
new record was set by John Schrum
in the 500 yard crawl with a time
of 5:39.0.

Coach Law cited the opening
medley relay as giving a big lift to
his swimmers and setting the tone
of the meet. "I thought we would
lose it ... we had a real good time."
He went on to say that John
Schrum's unexpected second place
in the 200 yard crawl was the
turning point in the meet.

The Mermen go against Wake
Forest, Friday, in Memorial
Gymnasium. The Deacs are
somewhat of an unknown quantity,
but they gave Virginia a real battle
last season before succumbing
55-49 in a meet undecided until the
last event.

Coach Law relished his victory,
but quickly assumed the role of a
pessimistic coach glancing toward
Friday and Wake Forest. "I was
pleased overall, but we need work
on our turns."
