Sports
Notes
The Pigskin Prognosticators
took it on the chin this past
weekend. There was much weeping
and cursing amongst the seers, but
the Sports Department has faced
failure before and no doubt will
again. Only Steve Giannini managed
to break .500, with the exception
of our guest Bill Reese, who picked
6 out of 9. The Ohio State upset
dismayed us greatly, but the Wake
Forest defeat at the hands of the
giant Gobbler wrought much more
havoc in our hearts. Maryland's win
was somewhat of a surprise, as was
the Texas victory over Oklahoma.
The Sports writers are down but
not out.
Carter Stadium in Raleigh,
North Carolina will be the scene
next week of what figures to be the
big game of the season for Virginia.
The Athletic Department is
sponsoring a bus trip to the game
which will leave Saturday at 8:15
from Memorial Gym and return
after the game. The price of $17
includes a game ticket worth $6.50,
box lunch, ice, and cups. The
crowd noise was a big factor at the
Duke game. It could be an even
more significant edge against N.C.
State.
All the while the Wahoos were
slipping past Duke, other mild
'upsets' were in the making. The
mighty Lafayette Menagerie was
toppled by Ohio State 13-0 before
some 85,000 people. The Maryland
Terps broke a long, long losing
streak outscoring the hapless Tar
Heels 33-24. The Green Wave of
Tulane, another future Cavalier
opponent, was dumped by a
seventh ranked Florida team, 24-3.
The Gamecocks of South Carolina
succumbed to the efforts of a fine
North Carolina State squad, 36-12.
An acquaintance of ours, Bob
Pollard, came to the University in
1959, and took his degree from the
College in 1963. He then entered
the Business School emerging two
years later with an M.BA. Still
unsatisfied with his education, he
went to law school for the next
three years, emerging last spring.
Had he been able to stay at Virginia
for one more year, he would finally
have seen the Cavaliers beat Duke.
