Wahoos Seek Win Over Devils
Virginia Must Stop
Duke Aerial Show
By Bruce Franzel
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Now that the Cavaliers know
who Davidson is...they are about to
find out about Duke. Virginia
travels down to Durham, Blue Devil
country, which in the past has been
hell. The Wahoos have not beaten
Duke in Durham since 1951
although they did win at Scott
Stadium in 1958.
The Blue Devils are leading the
Atlantic Coast Conference in
passing offense, and in passing
defence. The Cavaliers are only
sixth in the conference, ahead of
Clemson and Maryland in that
department.

If Virginia is going to continue
in their winning, and perhaps
romping, ways, they are going to
have to find a way of containing
the excellent passing offense which
the Blue Devils are capable of
providing. "Naturally we
emphasized pass defense in our
practices this week," Coach
Blackburn commented.
There are two quarterbacks
responsible for the outstanding
passing records, sophomores Leo
Hart and David Trice. Trice, who
was an All- State quarterback at
Lane in his senior year three years
ago, was Coach Tom Harp's choice
to start the season at the
quarterback slot, but a knee injury
gave Hart the opportunity to prove
himself. Trice played behind
Arnette for two years at Lane.
Hart directed the Blue Devils to
a 14-7 upset victory over South
Carolina in the opening game of the
season. In completing 15 of 26
passes against USC for 214 yards,
Hart was named the ACC offensive
player of the week, not bad for a
varsity debut.
On the receiving end of these
aerials are senior wing end Henley
Carter and junior Marcel
Courtillet. Courtillet and Carter are
numbers two and three in the ACC
in pass receiving with 458 yards
between them in 30 receptions.
In last week's game against
Maryland, Carter caught a pass
from Trice which appeared to be a
trapped ball in the crucial closing
seconds of the game. It appeared to
be a trapped ball, however, to
everyone except the official. On the
next play. Dave Pugh kicked a field
goal with 0:00 showing on the
clock to give the Blue Devils the
win, 30-28.
Aside from the air show, the
Blue Devils don't have much in the
way of an offense or defense. They
are last in both rushing offense and
defense, while the Cavaliers lead in
both departments.

If the Wahoos can even put a
slight damper on the Duke aerial
attack, they should have no trouble
in starting their ACC record off
with a victory. It could be another
statistical carnival.
