IM Roundup
Football Wars Begin
By Hugh Antrim
Under the bright, sunny skies of
a fair fall afternoon, some thirty
fraternities kicked off their bids for
IM supremacy. Plays were unveiled
that should have been auctioned off
to Tom Landry, or for more
practical purposes to Otto Graham.
There was the usual deadly
serious enthusiasm for the sport,
and there was the expected disdain
for the officiating. Nevertheless, the
completion of the scheduled fifteen
games initiates what should be
another successful season on the IM
gridiron.
St.A., last year's IM overall
champion; edged Phi Psi 6-0 in a
close battle. Tom Moore scored the
game's only touchdown. Led by the
offensive spark of Jack
Copenhauer Sigma Nu defeated
Delta Sig 19-6.
Phi Gam, helped along with
three touchdown efforts of Dick
Jordon, trounced PEP by a score of
33-0.
St. Elmo squeaked past Sigma Pi
13-12. The difference in that game
was the crucial point after
touchdown successfully executed
by Dick Tuggle for St. Elmo. AEPi
tagged Pi Lambda with a 13-0
shutout.
Chuck Spaid's one tally for
PiKA was enough to down Phi Kap,
6-0 in a struggle of defenses. ZBT
overcame the Chi Psi gridders by
the score of 15-6. Bob Galione's
two touchdown performances
netted DKE the 12 points it needed
in pushing past Sigma Phi 13-6.
Zete, the defending football
champ, continued in its winning
ways by upending SPE 25-6. Jim
Potter scored three times in Zete's
bid for continued football
domination. SAM fell to the lone
touchdown of Phi Sig's Pete
Samborne, 6-0. ATO blanked PiKap
18-0.
Clay Ratteree's one score was
enough to claim victory for SAE,
7-0 over KA. Phi Delt bea Theta
Chi 12-6; and Theta Delt, led by
Harry Greene, defeated TKE by the
narrow margin of 6-0.
For the most part, the games
were close. The many low scoring
contests are a probable indication
of the emphasis given to the
defensive specialists.
The next action slated for these
fraternity gridders occurs Monday
afternoon. With only one game
away, it is much too soon to
speculate on league or division
championships. One might concede,
however, that the competition does
look balanced, promising an
exciting season in Madison Bowl.
