Wahoos Invading Land
Of Boilermakers Today
By Ted McKean
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
As you pour over this article in
the midst of your nine or ten
o'clock (eight o'clock for poor
neophytes), your Cavalier football
team is jetting its way to Lafayette,
Indiana. Tomorrow is the big day,
the one you have heard about all
week on this page. Tomorrow,
Virginia goes against the Purdue
Boilermakers.
With final preparations made,
the most noteworthy information
coming from Coach George
Blackburn is that overall, his team
is healthy, and ready for what may
be their supreme football test of
the fall.
Only split end Rick Moschel will
not make the trip. He has injured a
knee, although not so seriously that
he will be out for any duration.
Starting at split end tomorrow
therefore will be second-year man
Jim Carrington, backed up by Bob
Bischoff.
Peter Schmidt will handle the
kick off chores, and at this point,
only Mr. Blackburn knows who will
kick the extra points. Both
Carrington and Schmidt have been
erratic in this department. Schmidt
will most likely boot any long field
goal chances.
All aches and pains of a hard
week's practice are healed. Star
halfback Frank Quayle, who has
been hindered for the past ten days
with a bruised foot, would be
ready to go full tilt. Quarterback
Gene Arnette, also bruised, is ready
to go.
Virginia plans to throw a
diversified attack at Purdue. The
running of Quayle and Jeff
Anderson should be complimented
by the roll out, option plays of
Arnette. The experienced offensive
line will be counted on to provide
the backs with openings, while
Arnette will most likely point
toward the two inexperienced
players in the Purdue defensive
backfield with his passes.
Defensively, Don Lawrence's
platoon will work from either of
two basic formations, a 5-2 or 4-3,
depending on shifts in the offense.
The key to success will be to keep
the almighty Leroy Keyes inside,
and to contain the roll outs of
quarterback Mike Phipps; it is to
this end that Lawrence has
patterned his defensive game plan.
The team departed this morning
at eight, and arrives at Lafayette at
ten. They will work out this
afternoon lightly, and then,
perhaps, settle back for a restful
night's sleep. . . .
On The Line Against Purdue
Defense: Sinesky, Ferrara, Constantine, Paczkoaki, Brand, Page, and Patton. Offense: Hoppe, Shelley, Kotulak, Ryczek, Hammer, Rogers, and Moschel.
