Cavalier Rally Then Falter
As Maryland Triumphs, 10-6

By Steve Giannini
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Falling to their third collegiate
defeat, the Cavalier stickmen
bowed Saturday in Scott Stadium
to Maryland, 10-6, in a game that
saw the Virginia team rally to
come from behind, and then falter
to lose.

The game opened with the Terps'
Mike Thomas firing a shot which
found the net, after they captured
the face-off. Goalie Jim
Eustace had his hands full as Maryland
controlled the ball and keep
it down in Virginia territory for
the majority of the first quarter.
In the early minutes he made 4
good saves.

Cavaliers Rally

As the second quarter began,
Eustace was out of position and
Fred Graham scored. Then the
Cavaliers came alive as Dennis
Pushkin collected a goal with an
assist by Jim Potter. Potter then
scored himself. Making a good
showing after a long layoff, Frank
Quayle bounced a long hard shot
in making the score 4-3 at the half,
with the Virginians on top.

Obviously the Terps had made
some adjustments at halftime, as
they came out in the third quarter
and completely blanked the
Cavaliers while they blasted in
5 tallies themselves. Luck also
seemed to turn against the home
team as the referee began to
call a very tight game. Three of
the Maryland scores came when
Virginia was a man down because
of a penalty. One sure Cavalier
goal bounced off the pipe supporting
the goal net.

The last quarter was anticlimactic
as Virginia could not manage to
score again until the waning
minutes of the game, while Maryland
added two scores earlier in
the period.

Terps' Depth Key

The Terps' depth in the midfield
was greatly felt; they held
the ball throughout the first, third
and most of the fourth quarter.
Most of the face-offs went to the
visitors.

Penalties hurt the University's
team, especially in the third quarter.
All-American defenseman
Peter Coy was penalized three
times, something unusual for a
player of his caliber. While different
Cavaliers were in the penalty
box, Maryland took advantage of
the situation and scored.

Displaying a wide and varied
attack, the Terps had six players
who hit the net. Mike Thomas
led them with 3 goals and 1 assist.
Coy played on star attackman
Steve LaVoute and held him to
only 1 goal.

Potter Leads Virginia Scorers

Jim Potter turned in the best
scoring performance for the Cavaliers
as he made 3 goals and assisted
on two others. Charlie Rullman
managed one goal and assisted
Potter on two of his tallies.

Goalie Jim Eustace had a very
busy afternoon as he made 11
saves in each half. First-year
man Al Hirsh saw a few minutes
of action as goalie and blocked
two Terp shots.

This Week

This loss puts the Cavaliers'
collegiate record at 4-3, with but
two games left. Wednesday they
play Washington & Lee, and then
this weekend the stickmen travel
to West Point, New York, to face
Army in their finale.
