Last Thursday Virginia's tennis
team lost to Maryland, one of
the ACC's better clubs, in a close
6-3 match.

The Cavaliers dropped the first
three singles matches. At number
one Mike Eikenberry had a rough
time, losing 6-2 and 6-1. Continuing
his tendency to play three set
matches, Jeff Podesta beat Dave
Werchen in the first set of the
number two match, 6-4, only to
lose the next two 6-3 and 6-0.
This is the fourth time that Podesta
and Werchen have faced each
other, and Werchen is ahead in
the series 3-1.

At number three, Nick
Makayenko shut out Virginia's
Andy Schienman completely, 6-0
and 6-0. Makayenko is an excellent
clay court player who
positioned the ball very well. He
is thirty-two years old, having
been in the Air Force for a long
period after graduating from high
school. In Coach Gordon Burris's
opinion, he is one of the best
tennis players in the entire conference.

Bob Kain won an impressive
9-7, 2-6, and 6-2 victory at number
four. Fulton Liss, Maryland's
number four player, had lost only
two matches previous to Thursday's
contest.

At number five Randy Herring
lost 0-6, 7-5, and 6-1. At number
six Biff Cooper fell behind, losing
the first set 0-6, and dropping
the first four games of the
second set. Cooper then rallied to
win the match 0-6, 7-5, and 6-1.

The doubles teams have been
rearranged for the last two
matches. The new number one
team is Mike Eikenberry and Andy
Scheinman. Against Maryland
they defeated, in straight sets, a
doubles team that had a 10-1 record,
having beaten many of the
ACC powers such as North Carolina.
The scores of the sets were
6-4 and 6-3.

The new number two team is
Jeff Podesta and George Chapman,
and the number three team stands
the same as before, Bob Kain
and Randy Herring. Both these
teams lost in straight sets against
Maryland.

Coach Burris felt that the team
came very close to upsetting Maryland.
What was needed, he commented,
were singles victories from
Eikenberry and Kain.
