Whether the venue is a sun-baked stadium or a tree-lined
fairway, the precision and the brutality are always present
in sports. Its emotions are deep and its results are
immediate. And as Jim Murray's study of Terry Bell
shows, it is often painful. Whatever the game, the contestants
find themselves swept away in the sheer thrill
of the moment; and their concentration must be equal to
the challenge at hand, as demonstrated by Murray's
close-up of Norm Carmichael and John Martinez's stop
action of an unidentified Virginia batter. Sometimes you
win and sometimes not; how you play the game is of
little solace. As Jim McKay says, it's the "thrill of victory
and the agony of defeat."
