Virginia Ruggers Rally;
Topple Baltimore 14-11

By Jim Waltzman

The Dogwood Festival Rugby
Classic was played Sunday afternoon
on Nameless Field. Virginia,
now ranked number one in college
rugby circles, defeated the Baltimore
Rugby Club by a score of
14-11.

Virginia's Allastair Duckworth
switched allegiance and played the
match for the Baltimore team.
Duckworth had played for Baltimore
four years ago.

Early in the first half, he converted
a 38 yard penalty kick,
giving Baltimore a 3-0 lead. Baltimore
followed this with a tri and a
conversion by Duckworth to
mount an 8-0 lead.

Just before the half, the Cavaliers'
John Ashton, an eight year
veteran of the game, booted a
penalty kick through the cross
bars to put Virginia on the scoreboard
with three points. The score
at the half stood: Baltimore, 8,
Virginia, 3.

Midway through the second
period, Duckworth converted a
placement, putting the opposition
even further in front, 11-3. The
game now appeared out of reach
for the Virginia ruggers.

However, the Virginia backs
finally began to get the ball out
and on the move. Pressing hard,
they brought the ball down into
Baltimore territory, and kept it
there. Gene Lyons made Virginia's
first tri as he darted through the
line-out and into the end zone
for three points.

In the last five minutes of play,
Virginia hooker, Kelly Wood,
showed a great ability at ball
hawking, and made two scores to
put the Virginians back in the contest.

With one conversion good by
Ashton, Baltimore's doom was
scaled, and the Cavaliers walked
off the field and to the beer
party with a 14-11 victory in their
back pockets.
