Seven Out Of Eight

Virginia Downs Spiders

By Tom Sansonetti

Malcolm Pitt is now in his
thirty-fourth year as head baseball
coach at the University of Richmond.

Richmond's home field has been
renamed for him, and, although
now in his seventies, he never
misses hitting infield practice before
every game. Yet all the strategy
gained through these years of experience
was not enough to lead
the Spiders over Virginia's Cavaliers
Wednesday afternoon at Lambeth
Field.

The final count was 4-2, and the
fact that it was a hard fought
come-from-behind victory made it
doubly sweet. Virginia found themselves
behind early in the contest
when in the second Richmond's
ace hurler, Dick Balderson, hit
a two strike pitch for a two run
homer to right center.

However, Virginia's starting and
winning pitcher Hunter Hollar
settled down, giving up only one
more hit in shutting out the
Spiders the rest of the way. Virginia
got the tying runs in the fifth
with the aid of three singles and
two Richmond miscues. They won
it in the sixth on a two run double
to left by catcher Kalvin Moore,
who happens to bat in the eighth
spot.

The Richmond rightfielder,
Steve Fowler, was a definite asset
in that fifth inning rally. With
two outs pitcher Hollar singled.
Leadoff man Joel DeBoe, who
went three-for-four yesterday, then
singled to right and when Fowler
threw the ball past third base the
Cavaliers had a run on the scoreboard
and a man on second.

The third baseman Bruce Boger
smacked a third straight single to
right field. Fowler this time decided
to let the ball roll past him
towards the track. DeBoe scored
the innings second run as Boger
continued on to second base.

Leading off the sixth Rowdy
Yates singled to the ever popular
Mr. Fowler who managed to stop
this one. Buzzy Schultz gave the
left fielder an opportunity to touch
he ball with a line single. Yates
was replaced by pinch runner
Bubba White on second base.
It was at this opportune time that
"Lupo" Moore delivered his key
blow.

Virginia's record now rests
at seven victories in fourteen
games. They have won seven of
their last eight contests.
