Virginia Homer
Edges Ashland
By Tom Sansonetti
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
A three run homer by Virginia
captain Yates Hall plus the strong
pitching of Hunter Hollar and Bill
Kelley led the baseball team to a
narrow 3-2 triumph yesterday at
Lambeth Field. The victim, for the
second straight day, was Ashland
College from Ohio. The win was
the fourth in a row for Coach
Jim West's charges, who are now
4-6.
Ashland could manage only
three hits compared with the Cavaliers'
six. Hollar hurled shutout
ball for the first five innings then
gave way to Kelley who completed
the game and picked up
his second victory of the year.
Kelley's needing more work was
the reason given by Coach West
for lifting Hollar after the fifth.
Cleanup Man Comes Through
All of Virginia's runs came in the
seventh when Buzzy Schultz and
Steve Bryant singled. Hall followed
with his heroic deed two pitches
later. Ashland, however, came
back with two runs of their own
in the top of the eighth.
Following a walk, an Ashland
batter hit a line drive that ended
up rolling towards the train tracks,
passing through centerfielder Bryant's
legs on the way. The batter,
given credit for a double, scored,
but Kelley got out of the inning
without further damage.
Spring Break Action
While many Virginia men used
their spring break to improve the
pallor of their pigmentation, the
Cavalier batmen were playing eight
games in six days, all of them on
the road. The Virginia nine
managed to drop the first six contests,
but rebounded with two wins
over South Carolina in a doubleheader
this past Saturday.
Coach Jim West commented that
"the team is a young one, and
they made quite a few mistakes;
however, they gained experience
each day and by the end of the
road trip were playing good ball."
West went on further to say that
he was satisfied with the progress
the team was making, and
that he believed the team could
win their share of the remaining
contests.
Doubleheader Win
Pitchers Bill Kelly and Stan
Owens, who had control problems
in their first starts against East
Carolina, settled down and pitched
well in facing the Gamecocks.
Kelley hurled the Cavaliers to a
3-2 win in the first game of Saturday's
doubleheader, and Owens
pitched a three hitter to win the
nightcap by a 2-1 score.
Virginia defeated Ashland College
Monday afternoon 8-2 at Lambeth
Field. Standout pitching performances
by two first-year men,
Ed Kihm and Brad Jordan,
sparked the victory. In eight innings
Kihn struck out fifteen
batters while Jordan, coming on
in the ninth, fanned the last three
Ashland batters.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a
3-0 lead in the first inning on a
walk to Bruce Boger, a single by
Steve Bryant, a two-out triple by
Rowdy Yates, and a wild pitch.
Buzzy Schultz led the Virginia
hitting attack with a triple and a
single. He scored twice.
Navigators are organizing themselves at the University.
The had a meeting last night and the Virginia sailing
club was born, with approximately 25 members. A constitution
has been ratified and the sailors will soon petition
the Student Council for recognition. In the works
are a regatta with Old Dominion College and affiliation
with the South Atlantic District of the Intercollegiate
Yacht racing Association, which would lead to competition
with Duke, William & Mary, Davidson and others.
The boat racers are led by Commodore Michael Bynane
and Vice Commodore Tracy Schwarzschild. No Admiral
Halseys have yet been discovered about the Grounds,
but anyone who knows a winch from a spinnaker is
urged to contact Commodore Bynane.
