Big Crowd Gathers
For Seven Matches
In Fisticuff Finale

One of the largest crowds to
see a sporting event in Memorial
Gym since the opening of University
Hall was on hand last
night for the High Point Intramural
Boxing finals. Only one defending
champion was dethroned
a program which referee and
American AAU light weight champion
Billy Williams said was the best
intramural boxing ever at the University.

The action started early in the
129 pound bout, as Rusty Bloodworth
of St. A. knocked Chi
Phi's George Whitlow from the
throne in a split decision.

In a unanimous decision, defending
champ Bruno DeBrun of
DKE defeated Sigma Nu's Rick
Parmlwy at 139 pounds.

In the 149 pound class, Jack
Hayden of KA fought valiantly
but could not take the crown
away from Kappa Sig's Bob
Kriegel in the split decision. At
the end of the program referee
Williams said that he believed
this was the best bout of the
evening.

In the following bout, Phi Gam's
only representative of the night,
Dick Jordan, captured the vacant
159 pound title by taking a split
decision from Bob Englander of
St. A.

One of Zete's two competitors
of the evening, Pete Gray, successfully
defended his champion status
by defeating Jim Carrington of
SPE. Although many of the
spectators protested vocally, the
judges gave the fight to Gray on
a unanimous decision.

At 178 pounds, Zete's second
contestant of the evening, Peter
Schmidt, followed fraternity
brother Gray's example and won
a unanimous decision over St.
A.'s Chris Searcy.

Many fans were wondering how
the heavyweight event would be
fought between Gary Saft and John
Kucera, both members of SPE.
The first two rounds were slow,
but in the final minute Saft picked
up both momentum and the crown.

In the post-fight awards ceremony,
the Albert T. York Trophy
for the Outstanding Boxer was
awarded to Rusty Bloodworth who
picked up the crown in the 129
pound division.

The Intramural Award for the
Most Improved Boxer went to
Jim Bryan who lost to defending
champ Bob Kriegel in the semifinals
on Tuesday night.

St. Anthony Hall won the High
Point Boxing Championship for
1968.
