Wolfpack Overcomes Deficit
To Defeat Cavalier Matmen
By Bob Cullen
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
It was the same old story for
the Virginia wrestling squad Monday
night in Raleigh. Reliable
fourth-year men Dave Williams
and Jon Shurberg started the
Cavaliers off with two victories in
the initial bouts, but their heavier
teammates were unable to sustain
the momentum.
This time it was North Carolina
State which came from behind to
rout the forces of Mike Caruso,
25-6. It was a disappointing performance
for the Cavaliers, who
had tied Duke only a week before.
Earlier in the season Duke had
decisively conquered the Wolfpack.
Dave Williams started Virginia
off with his most decisive win of
the year, conquering the Wolfpack's
Bill Cashman 19-3. Characteristically,
Williams started
slowly, and the score at the end
of the first period was only 2-0.
Thereafter Williams picked his
man apart, scoring almost at will,
though he was never able to put
his man down for a pin. The
bout concluded his regular season
competition with a record of 7-1-1,
tops on the team this year.
Jon Shurberg copped his fourth
victory in a row, with a tight
3-2 decision over the Pack's ace
at 130. The Virginia captain scored
his points with a takedown and
an escape in a match that could
have gone either way.
Shurberg, along with Williams,
will be dropping down a notch for
the conference championships this
weekend in College Park. At 115,
Williams, who is still improving,
should go into the competition as
a co-favorite with Maryland's John
Baker, while Shurberg should be
a strong contender for the championship
at 123.
But after this duo, the squad
gave little indication of being a
threat last weekend. Chuck Westcott
lost a close 6-4 decision in
his bout at 137. With the score
even at 4 apiece in the final period,
State's Lewis racked up two points
on a locked hands penalty and
an escape to start the Wolfpack
on its way to winning the next
seven contests.
Particularly disappointing were
the next two Virginians to take the
mat, John Pegues at 145 and Tom
Moore at 152. They managed to
score only two points between
them. The Pack's Brawley
dominated Pegues in a 9-1 victory,
and Moore was equally ineffective
in a 6-1 loss to Bill Couch.
None of the four remaining
bouts were even close. Greg Hicks
decked Virginia's Ron Bright with
only 13 seconds gone in the second
period, after rolling to a 7-0 lead
in the first period.
Pete Faber lost at 167 to Bob
Harry, 6-0 and Bob's brother Ben
took the measure of Cavalier Jay
Douglas at 177. Mac Horton suffered
a second period fall to end
the match.
