Cagers Lose Two,
Then Defeat Navy

By Tom Sansonetti

Playing before a dedicated but
perhaps depleted home crowd, the
Virginia basketball team dropped
two of three home games over the
semester break. The Cavaliers'
home court advantage might well
have been the same had they played
in Nome, Alaska, for most students
had already left town when
N.C. State arrived for its encounter
with Virginia.

Thus it seems a shame that as
the Athletic Department continually
urges more students to pass
through the turnstiles, it schedules
three of the remaining seven home
contests during the break when
most students have already fled the
Grounds.

Last Word

To top it all off, coinciding with
the students' return to Charlottesville,
last night's engagement
against UNC was not in
Charlottesville of course but rather
at Chapel Hill instead.

Though lacking its usual vocal
support, the team's play has been
admirable. The two losses to ACC
foes, N. C. State (79-77) and Duke
(90-78), were hard fought battles.

Navy Sinks

The single victory (over Navy)
was an experience in patience for
the Cavaliers. The Middies hit 12
of their first 13 shots, but Virginia
stuck with them and waited for
their opponents to become human
once again.

Norm Carmichael and Tony
Kinn were the offensive stars with
28 and 24 points respectively. Mike
Wilkes and Mike Katos also hit
double figures in a game which
saw Coach Gibson use every Virginia
player.
