Powerful Maryland Matmen
Meet Caruso's Contingent

By Bob Cullen
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The University of Maryland
wrestling team has never lost an
ACC match in fourteen years of
competition. The Terps last lost
to Virginia in 1948, before some
of this year's competitors were
born. So it's a good bet that
there will be no upset Saturday
night in University Hall when
Mike Caruso's Cavaliers take on
the perennial Conference champs.

Maryland is coming off a 22-8
thrashing at the hand of Lehigh
last week-end but the fact that
they scored eight points against
the nationally-ranked Engineers indicates
their clear preeminence in
the meeker circles of ACC wrestling.

The Terps, winners of the Coast
Guard Invitational Tournament,
have some weaknesses in their
line-up. Unfortunately, where they
are relatively weak, from 160 to
191, the Cavaliers are really hurting,
having but one victory in these
divisions to their credit this year.

Rejuvenated captain Jon Shurberg,
the only winner last year
against Maryland, faces Jeff Paxton,
a junior with a 6-2 mark.
Paxton also lost in the Lehigh
match, and his other defeat came
in the finals of the tourney at
New London.

First-year man John Pegues,
with the option of wrestling at
145 or 137 has chosen to test
himself against Maryland's best,
Curt Callahan at 145. Callahan is
another Coast Guard winner, and
he has yet to be defeated this
year. He was chosen the outstanding
Terrapin wrestler in both the
Lehigh and Army meets.

Pegues' step up doesn't leave
Chuck Wescott with an easy bout
at 137. If the Terps' undefeated-but-injured
Kevin Gilead can't
wrestle on Saturday night, Wescott
will be facing senior letterman
Kent Webster.

Virginia's other undefeated
grappler, third-year man Tom
Moore at 152 comes up against
Gobel Kline. Kline sports a 7-0
record including one of the two
Maryland wins against Lehigh.
Coach Caruso believes that if
Moore can get through this match
he should finish the season unbeaten.

Due to his good showing against
VMI last week, Pete Faber gets
the nod at 160, followed by Rick
Evans, and Mac Horton, all of
whom have yet to win this season.
Heavyweight Rick Constantine
faces Maryland's last undefeated
performer in Ralph Sonntag,
a sophomore.
