Player Of The Week

Wilson Lowers Own Record

By Bob Cullen
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The best way to evaluate Jack
Wilson's worth to the unbeaten
Virginia swimming team is to quote
his coach, Ralph Law: "As Jack
goes, so go the Cavaliers. We
count on him in a tough meet
to win two events and lead the
medley relay team to victory."

Holds Four Records

It's a shame that the rules prohibit
Wilson from swimming in
more than three events. The husky
architecture student holds individual
school records in four,
and this week he lowered his
University standard in the 200
yard freestyle to 1:58.4.

That race necessitated a further
change in the display of school
marks over the pool in Memorial
Gym, but Wilson has been causing
such changes since he came to
Virginia after an All-America prep
career at Lawrenceville.

Relays, Too

Wilson's name also heads the
all time list for Virginia performers
in the 200 yard individual medley
at 2:14.5, the 200 yard backstroke
(2:14), and the 50 yard freestyle
(23.4). In addition, he was a
member of the Cavaliers' fastest
400 yard freestyle and medley relay
teams.

Wilson's natural talent is such
that Coach Law estimates that had
he been swimming with a national
power and reaping the benefits of
really tough competition for the
past four years, Wilson would be
a nationally ranked swimmer
today.

Threat In ACC Meet

Be that as it may, Wilson is
still a threat in any of his pet
events for the upcoming Duke
and Maryland meets and in the
ACC championships in March at
Chapel Hill.

He and the tankers' other co-captain,
Terry Gromel, are the two
biggest reasons that the swimmers
are undefeated now, and with the
finest swimmer ever to hit the
water for Virginia in the pool, the
Cavaliers can just about swim
with anybody.
