Wrestlers Meet With VMI;
Team To Try To Even Score
By Bob Cullen
The Keydets of VMI will be
the next obstacle on the road that
Coach Mike Caruso and his crew
must travel to reach their goal of
a winning season. With 1-2 record
thus far, and several stiff
opponents still to be met, the
match this Saturday in Lexington
assumes the proportions of a
"must" contest.
Shurberg Returns
Captain Jon Shurberg resumes
his post at 130, due to a decisive
victory over Ed McClung in an
intra-squad challenge match. Shurberg
will follow one of the team's
most solid performers in diminutive
Dave Williams at 123.
A new feature in the VMI match
will be a bout at 115, which will
be wrestled for the Cavaliers by
first-year man Charles Sutton.
John Pegues will move up to
145 Saturday to take the mat with
an injured knee. Pegues is switching
positions with Chuck Wescott, who
drops down to 137.
Tom Moore anchors the Cavaliers
from his spot at 152. The
towheaded third-year man has been
the Cavaliers' most consistent performer
with a pin against Carolina
to his credit.
Moore Injured
A notch further up at 160, Ted
Moore has been lost with another
knee injury for at least a month.
Tom McCord who has been filling
in capably at several positions
this season will attempt to fill that
gap. Rick Evans will be searching
for his first win at 167.
Yesterday Paul Boehm left the
squad for "personal reasons" and
his place at 177 will be taken by
another first-year man, McNeil
Horton, who has been slated to go
at 191.
Jay Douglas, a first-year man
from Falls Church, makes his
debut at 191, the spot vacated by
Horton. Rick Constantine resumes
duties at heavyweight Saturday.
Constantine was forced to miss the
Christmas tournament, again due
to prior obligations.
Keydets Favored
VMI enters the match with a 2-1
record. Their loss was by only
one point to North Carolina, a
team that the Cavaliers handled
easily almost a month ago. But
the team that takes to the mats
Saturday will have five men that
could not make the starting team
in the Carolina match.
In coach Caruso's estimation
that inexperience factor plus the
Keydets' home-court advantage
and the traditional VMI spirit
casts the Cavaliers in the role of
underdogs.
"I believe this match will be the
turning point of our season. We'll
be green and inexperienced and
we've been weak all year in the
heavyweights. But we'll have 11
fighters out there.
