Horsemen Top Cornell;
Still Remain Undefeated
By Ridgely Porter
Virginia's powerful polo team
extended its unblemished record to
six wins and no losses when it
defeated previously unbeaten Cornell
5-2, Sunday. Playing before a
crowd of about 250 people, the
Cavaliers put forth their best effort
of the season in downing the
nation's best squad.
Sunday's game, according to
Coach Harry Robertshaw was one
of the best wins in the history of
Virginia Polo. Tony Adams,
Randy Jones and Willie McCormick
provided their strongest
effort of the season.
The size and excitement of the
crowd at Brook Hill Farm was
evidence of the importance of the
match.
Although Cornell played without
Pete Orthwein, the Big Red
still had one-goaler Tom O'Conner
and a record of twelve Intercollegiate
Championships.
In the opening minutes of the
first chukkar, the famous Cornell
offense began to click
Armstrong outwitted the Cavalier
defense and scored on a 20-yard
forehand shot. Randy Jones
bounced back for the Cavaliers and
tied the score at 1-1. Cornell
struck again as Tom O'Connor
scored and gave the Big Red a
2-1 lead at the end of the first
chukkar.
The Cavalier offense began to
jell in the second chukkar, as Willie
McCormick and Randy Jones
scored a pair of goals. At half-time
Virginia held a shaky 3-2
lead.
In the third chukkar Cornell
began to dominate on offense.
Again and again the Big Red
threatened and the Cavalier defense
held on.
Two great saves by Willie McCormick
inches from the goal
finally broke the back of the Cornell
offense. In the fourth chukkar
Cornell again threatened but McCormick
stole the ball and passed
it downfield to Adams who sent
the ball through the uprights to
score the winning goal.
