Virginia Poloists
Meet Georgetown;
Old Grads Nipped

By Ridgely Porter

Still unbeaten, the polo team
won its second game of the season
last Sunday at Brook Hill
Farm by upsetting a powerful
Alumni team, 6-4, and thereby
seemed to promise a successful
season and perhaps a win over
Georgetown this weekend.

Playing before a small crowd in
the drizzling rain, the Cavaliers
fought valiantly to defeat an
Alumni nationally ranked at 5
goals.

This victory represented much
hard work and superb teamwork
by the Wahoo Malletmen. Thus
the hard riding by Willie McConick
and Randy Jones, and
good defense by Tony Adams and
George Greenhalgh should make
Virginia "the team to beat" this
Sunday when it faces Georgetown
Polo Club at Brook Hill Farm.
Georgetown should provide stiff
competition and an interesting
game.

Last Sunday Virginia started out
with a 2-0 lead as they were
awarded a 2-goal handicap. But
in the opening minute, Roger Rinehart
scored for the Alumni, and
moments later, Freddy Peterson,
a two-goal player, tied the score
with a beautiful 50-yard forehand
shot. The Cavaliers bounced back
as Willie McCormick scored and
Randy Jones added another tally
to give Virginia a 4-2 lead at
the end of the first chukker.

In the second chukker, Willie
McCormick, beautifully assisted
by Tony Adams, scored for Virginia;
however, Roger Rinchart
struck again, and the half ended
with Virginia leading, 5-3.

Both teams started slowly in
the second half as neither team
scored in the third chukker.

In the fourth chukker Roger
Rinchart again found the range,
cutting Virginia's lead to 5-4. With
only moments remaining the
Alumni were again banging on the
door, but a beautiful back shot
by Tony Adams set the ball up
for Randy Jones, who took it
down and scored as the gun
sounded, giving Virginia a 6-4
victory.
