Tar Babies Smash
'Yearlings 34-14

By Ted McKean

Spurred on by the powerful running
of halfback Don McCauley,
and the effective roll out quarterbacking
of Ricky Lanier, the University
of North Carolina Tar
Babies convincingly whipped the
Cavayearling footballers by the
score of 34-14, Friday at Scott
Stadium.

Following the Cavalier's opening
kickoff, Carolina needed only
three minutes before she truck pay-dirt.
McCauley ripped off several
long gains before going over left
tackle to make the score 6-0. The
successful placement left the home
side down by seven quick points.

Another Tally

Following Carolina's kickoff,
the ball exchanged hands once before
the Tar Babies recorded their
second TD on the runback of an
rant Bill Ketunnen pass. As the
quarter ended, Wahoo hopes
looked dim. The Tar Babies had
ripped off 14 points with relative
case.

The Cavayearlings bounced back
spiritedly, however, Capitalizing
on a crucial fumble by North
Carolina at their own three yard
line, the Wahoos drove in for their
first score, with Andy Selfridge
going off tackle for the tally.
Jim Carrington added the placement.

Quick Strike

Unfortunately, Carolina was not
to be outdone: McCauley promptly
returned the kickoff 80 yards
for a tally, upping the score to
20-7 in favor of the visitors. The
placement was missed, and both
teams paraded to the locker room
for halftime.

The Yearlings received the kickoff
following halftime, and proceeded
to drive for a score, interrupted
by only one brief turnover
to the Carolinians. Clinch
Heyward knifed through the Carolina
line repeatedly, setting up the
score for Selfridge, who plunged
over from the one. With the successful
point attempt, the Cavaliers
had closed the gap to 20-14.

From this point on, however, the
game belonged to the Tar Babies.
Their workhorse, McCauley, tore
off long gains frequently, and
Lanier rolled out with equal case.

Lanier Scores

Early in the fourth quarter,
Lanier skirted the Cavalier flank
on a ten-yard scoring scamper.
The successful placement left the
score in Carolina's favor, 27-14.

Capitalizing on a Terry Bell
fumble, McCauley and Lanier
teamed once again to add North
Carolina's final score of the afternoon,
pushing the lopsided total
to 34-14.

While Coach Alderman's
charges showed spots of brilliance,
notably the hard running of fullback
Selfridge and the gutsy linebacking
of Charlie Blandford,
North Carolina's Tar Babies
simply proved too powerful.

VMI tackles the Yearlings next,
on October 13 at home.
