Memorial Gym Action
Wrestling Finals Feature Top Talent
By FLETCHER THOMPSON
After three days of
sweating, scrapping and
struggling, a field of over 100
intramural wrestlers has been
whittled down to 20 for
tonight's 7:45 finals in
Memorial Gym.
Featured in what promises
to be the classiest final round
in IM history will be two
former ACC place-winners and
three replays of last year's
finals.
Zeta Pal's Kim Hatcher, a
118 lb. champion in 1970, and
Sigma Nu's Lynn Housner, a
runner-up at 150 that same
year, are odds-on favorites to
mop the mat with two
less-experienced opponents.
Hatcher, who has moved up
to 134, advanced to the finals
with an effortless 30 second
pin, while his opponent, Pika's
Ken Clemmens, had almost as
easy a time with his man.
Heavyweight Housner, a
former high-school teammate of
Hatcher, also disposed of his
semi-final opponent in short
order and will lock up with
independent Richard Oftedal a
1-0 overtime victor over Phi
Kap's Gil Smith.
Housner, who also goes by
the name of "Gross Wicker," is
known for his confidence on
the mat, although he
downgraded his chances in
tonight's bout, predicting a
"high scoring, hotly contested"
affair.
At 150, Phi Delt's Randy
"Per" Wert, a three-time IM
champion, and winner of last
year's Outstanding Wrestler
Trophy, will find himself up
against Sigma Nu's tenacious
Doug Brindle.
Another former
Outstanding Wrestler, Dave
"Thrasher" Nash of Sigma Nu,
will also be out for his fourth
straight title and a repeat of his
1972 6-0 shutout of
independent Larry Davis in the
167 lb. class.
Other finals bouts will see
Zete's Billy Cooper taking on
former varsity letterman Ed
Fink at 126, Jake Kenworth of
Phi Gam. and Chi Phi's Alan
Rasmussen squaring off in a
rematch of their last year's
142-lb. final, independent Joe
Lacasio and Page's Mike
Donohoe battling for the
158-lb. title, Phi Delt's Jack
Harris and independent Jeff
Bower at 177 and Hancock's
Steve Johnson going against
Phi Delt's Ed Lawto at 190.
