Virginia Tech Sinks Linksters,
Cavs Fall To Fifth In States
By ALLEN IRISH
Virginia has toppled from its
position as king of the state
golf circuit Monday, as the VPI
Hokies won the Virginia golf
championship at the Lower
Cascades golf course in Hot
Springs, Va.
Low man for the Cavaliers
was Brad Reynolds who carded
rounds of 77 and 79 for a total
of 156, four strokes behind
medalist Nelson Long of Tech,
who shot rounds of 76-76 for a
152 total.
The play of the Virginia
squad can only be described as
atrocious as the co-favorite
Cavaliers fell to fifth overall,
14 strokes behind Virginia
Tech and three strokes behind
golf powerhouse Roanoke
College.
In last years tournament, the
University ran off with the
state title, defeating runnerup
Tech by ten strokes, and were
expected to successfully
defend their title Monday.
Behind Reynolds in the Cav
scoring were King Oehmig,
who had rounds of 81 and 77
for a 158 total; Whit Holcomb,
who blew to a first round score
of 85, but turned in a saving 75
for a total of 160; and Bill
Hickson, who carded rounds of
80 and 83 for a score of 163.
Fourth year man Mike
Mozur, who led the Wahoos in
the ACC Tournament, hacked
out rounds of 84 and 81 for a 165.
This is the Cavalier's second
poor tournament this month;
earlier they tumbled into the
conference gold cellar in the
ACC championships held at the
Foxfire Golf Club in Pinehurst
N.C. In the conference
tourney, Virginia was an
incredible 85 strokes behind
titlist Wake Forest, with each
Cav taking an average of 17
swings more than his Deacon
counterpart over the three
rounds of play.
Coach Gordon Burris'
golfers close out the season
May 9 at Annapolis, when they
take on Navy, Maryland, and
Penn State in a four-way meet.
