Easter weekend brought
mixed tidings for Virginia's
two tennis teams.

The men finished fifth in
the ACC tournament at Wake
Forest, while the women
returned from a strong
third-place showing in the
State tournament in
Lynchburg to down Hollins,
4-3, yesterday on the Perry
Memorial Courts.

In the ACC's, North
Carolina captured its fourth
straight conference title with a
score of 64 points. Clemson
moved up from last year's
fourth- place finish to take
second with 52, edging the
third-place Deacons who had
51.

Duke was fourth with 45,
while Virginia's 43 points were

good enough to beat only
Maryland and N. C. State.

Number-two singles man
Frank Hatten was the
Cavaliers' only individual
titlist, decisioning Maryland's
Bob Garmany in the second
flight finals, 4-6, 7-5, 12-10.

Hatten and Hoyt Murray
combined to reach the finals of
the number- two doubles,
where they lost to UNC's Tom
Hardaway and Bob Dickson.

The women's tennis team
proved yesterday that it is, in
the words of Coach Ted
Putziger, "at least the second
best team in the state."

Since Hollins nosed out
the Cavaliers by one point for
the second spot in last
weekend's State tournament in
Lynchburg, the win was
particularly satisfying for the
players. "This is the one we
wanted," said Putziger.

Lindsay Burns, the team's
number-one player, staged a
rematch victory over Mary
Wilson Pinder. Pinder, who had
come out on top when the two
met in the State tourney, went
down easily to Burns' quick,
well-aimed shots.

"I don't think she missed a
line all day," Putziger added.

Burns' dual match record
now stands at 6-1, which is
identical to the team's mark.
She will represent the
University in singles in this
weekend's Middle Atlantic
Lawn Tennis Association
tournament and will combine
with teammate Beth Krieger in
the doubles.

Krieger, the squad's
number-two player, lost a
tie-breaker in the first set to
Hollins' Christy Hays and was
unable to take away her
opponent's momentum,
dropping the next set, 7-5.

The two schools split the
remaining singles matches.
Cavalier Lynn Davis, runnerup
in the State tournaments'
second division fell in three
sets 0-6, 7-5, 3-6, while Brucie
Gibson had no trouble with her
Hollins opponent 6-2, 6-0.

The afternoon's deciding
factor was Virginia's 2-1 lead in
doubles. Cavaliers Kathleen
Weber and Kathleen Foster
were beaten 6-3, 6-3 but the
combination of Joyce
Bradbury-Carolyn Gentry and
Sandy Stone-Stacy Williams
triumphed 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-2
respectively.
