Deacons Tough
Cav Golfers Swing Into Action
By DOUG DOUGHTY

King Oehmig

Ben Gray
ACC Champ Jim Simons
and Eddie Pearce turned pro
last summer but Jesse
Haddock's Demon Deacons are
perennially strong. Leader of
this young team is senior Tom
Case, a three-year letterman.
ETSU's star is Virginia
State Amateur Champion
Bobby Wadkins, brother of pro
star Lanny.
The Cavaliers have the
misfortune of not having a
home match on their schedule.
After today's three-day
event, Virginia takes part in the
Furman Invitational at
Greenville, S.C., the Maryland
Spring Classic at College Park,
the ACC Championships and
the State Championships, to be
held at the Homestead's Upper
C scade course.
The conference race should
be closer than usual this year
with Carolina's 15-stroke
advantage over fifth-place
Virginia in the Camp Lejeune
matches some indication. Wake
has won six straight conference
titles and the Deacons were
sixth in the NCAA's last year
but graduation has severely
depleted their ranks.
Runner-up to Wake last
season was Maryland but the
Terps have lost fourth and fifth
place finishers Rick Bendall
and Ken Peyre-Ferry. Wake's
Simons, Pearce and Steve
Walker were the first three a
year ago, leaving Case, ACC
runner-up in 1971, as favorite
for the league event.
Tough Opponents
After a fifth-place finish in
last week's Camp Lejeune
Invitational, the Cavalier golf
team will compete this
afternoon in a similar event,
the 14-team Palmetto
Invitational at Orangeburg,
S.C.
Unfortunately for Virginia,
each of the four teams that
finished in front of the Wahoos
at Camp Lejeune will be
making the trek to Orangeburg.
North Carolina won the event,
followed by Clemson, N.C.
State and East Carolina. The
Cavaliers finished ahead of
Maryland, Duke and Notre
Dame, with the latter two also
competing today.
Leading Virginia will be
fourth-year men Mike Mozur
and King Oehmig. Mozur, the
team's captain, shot
74-71-72...217 and tied for
third and Oehmig, one stroke
back, finished in a tie for sixth.
The rest of the lineup
consisted of Brad Reynolds,
who shot 222 and tied' for
15th, first-year man Whit
Holcomb who shot 229 and
held down 31st place, and
third-year men Bill Hickson
and Henry Stevens.
Although Coach Gordon
Burris was not displeased with
his team's showing, he was
"not satisfied" with the
performance o Hickson and
Stevens, who will be subjected
to eliminations before making
the trip.
Competing for the fifth and
sixth spots on the squad are
other team members
fourth-year man Ben Gray,
third-year men Cabell Moore
and Mike Balavage, second-year
man Bill Gascoigne and rookies
Tom Gildemeister, Todd
Jewett, Don Haverman and
Steve Mozur, Mike's brother.
More Competition
Not only will most of the
teams from last week's match
be around for the Orangeburg
event, but Southern powers
Wake Forest, East Tennessee
State and Georgia will also
present Virginia formidable
competition.
