Penn State Falls, 85-74

'Drum' Leads Cavs Over Lions

By JOHN MARKON

Cavalier guard Al
Drummond scored 15 points
and threw an effective
defensive blanket over Penn
State star Ron Brown to lead
the Wahoos over the Nittany
Lions, 85-74, in University Hall
action Saturday night.

"Make sure you tell
Drummond that I think he did
a great job," were Brown's
words after the game as the
man whose 23 points led Penn
State to a win over the Cavs
last season was held to a
mere six by Drummond. Of
Brown's nine field goal
attempts, only two were
destined to find the basket.

Balanced scoring featured
the Virginia attack as five Cavs
racked up double figure scoring
totals. First-year forward Wally
Walker led all scorers with 16
points and he was followed by
Drummond and Barry Parkhill
wil 15, forward Bob McKeag,
credited by coach Bill Gibson
with his "best game ever," with
14, and guard Andy Boninti
with 12.

Cavalier rebounding was
also a key factor as the Wahoos
outrebounded the Lions, a
team that specializes in board
work, 51-44. Center Gus
Gerard, who had his troubles
on offense, scored only six
points but led all rebounders
with 13.

Gerard was instrumental in
Virginia's fine handling of Penn
State center Randy Meister
who, along with Brown, was
very effectively contained.

Meister helped out by
containing himself at the foul
line, making only one of eight
free throws, but he was
successful on only four of 13
shots from the field and was
held to only seven rebounds.

"Meister just didn't have
that kind of a night, he just
played a bad game," was the
way a disappointed Penn State
coach John Bach described it.

"We wanted to use Meister
inside," Bach continued,"we
don't mind using Brown the
way we did, to bring the ball
upcourt and to run the offense,
but if we want to get away
with it, Randy has to play
well."

Penn State, whose NIT
hopes were severely damaged
by the loss, was put on a
defensive posture early when
Parkhill, a native of State
College, Pa., hit his first four
shots to boost the Cavs into a
fast 8-2 lead.

Parkhill cooled off shortly
afterward but, after a Lion hot
streak tied the score at 18-18
with 10:47 left, Walker and
McKeag took over the scoring
chores for Virginia and led the
Cavs to a string of ten straight
points.

Penn State was to draw
close again at 41-38 in the
opening moments of the
second half but another
Virginia surge, led this time by
Parkhill and Drummond,
quickly had the Cavs up by
51-41.

A steal and layup by
McKeag gave the Wahoos their
biggest lead at 68-48 with 7:53
remaining. The Lions, however,
were able to cut the advantage
down to the final margin of 11
points when referrers James
Howell and John Russell
began to foul everyone out.

Disqualified on fouls were
Gerard, Parkhill, and Lion
starters Keenan Preston and
Jon Marshall. Preston, a 6-3
swingman, was very effective
guarding Parkhill and his 11
first half points helped keep
the Lions in the game. He
finished with 13 to lead his
team.

Other Penn State scoring
had reserve freshman guard
Tom Doaty picking up ten
points in only seven minutes of
action and Meister and guard
Kevin Burke each hitting for
nine. Substitute forward Bill
Kunze had eight points, Brown
six and a pride of
Lions–Marshall, Ed Chubb and
Bill Angstadt–each had five.

Also scoring fof Virginia
were forward Jim Hobgood,
who had six, and guard Larry
Gerry, who contributed one
point.

A member of the crowd
who seemed particularly
impressed was one Ray
Morningstar, a 6-10 high school
senior from Buffalo, N.Y. who
just might want to play his
college ball here at the
University.

Morningstar won't be
around U Hall tonight but Mr.
Gibson and the players have
already expressed a desire for a
large turnout for the game with
Clemson. Student tickets are
still available.
