Record Breaking Receiver Dave Sullivan

When you lead your team
in touchdowns and your
conference in pass receiving,
you can expect some
post-season honors to come
your way. Whether he
expected it or not, though,
wide receiver Dave Sullivan
grabbed his first accolades
yesterday when he was selected
Cavalier Daily Player of the
Year.

In gaining the award
traditionally given out to the
fourth-yearman deemed "Most
Valuable" by the CD Sports
Department, Sullivan presented
an array of impressive
credentials.

On the season he caught 51
passes for 662 yards and seven
scores. In addition, he wiped
out almost every University
receiving record, erasing names
such as Sonny Randle, John
Pincavage and Bill Davis from
the record books.

Sullivan graduated from
Steelton-Highspire High School
in Steelton, Pa. five years ago
and is presently working
towards his Masters degree in
the Education School.

Sullivan made his debut as a
varsity athlete here during the
1970 season and was a
quadruple-threat type player,
He saw duty and posted good
statistics as a receiver, running
back, and returner on punts
and kickoffs.

Relieved of returning chores
and confining his rushes to
occasional end-arounds,
Sullivan has concentrated on
receiving for the last two years
and can boast career receiving
totals of 120 catches for 1577
yards, an average of 13.1 yards
per reception.

All these marks represent
career records. Sully also owns
marks for passes caught and
yards gained during a season
(both set this year) and shares
the standards for touchdowns
scored through the air with
Gene Schroeder (season) and
Davis (career).

Sully nailed seven TD serials
this season to complement five
from the previous two years.

It is, perhaps, ironic that
Sullivan would be able to even
approach his fine totals in a
year when because of injuries
and other factors, five Wahoo
quarterbacks saw game action.
Learning to work with at least
the top three of these men;
Scott Gardner, Harrison Davis
and George Allen, must have
taken up considerable practice
time.

Other players considered
this year and deserving of
mention certainly include
Sullivan's pass-catching running
mate Chuck Belic, who's 39
grabs placed him second in the
ACC to Sullivan, and the
fourth-year co-captains,
defensive end Billy "Wills"
Williams and offensive guard
Tom Kennedy.

Other fourth-year men,
making valuable contributions
included starting linebacker
Kevin Michaels, guard Bill
Farrelli, fullback Greg
Dickerhoof and safety Chris
Brown. It's unfortunate to
note that the seasons of the
men mentioned save Belic and
Farrell were hampered by what
at times seemed a team
epidemic of injuries.

A New York Giants scout at
the Virginia-Wake Forest game
indicated some NFL interest in
Sullivan and Farrell as pro
prospects and both men seem
eager for a chance to play
professional ball.
