ACC Players—Of—The—Week

Carolina Boys Dominate Play

By WHIT HOLCOMB

As has been apparent in
recent weeks, the top
performers in the ACC are
found on North Carolina soil,
and these players did not play
their high school football in
that state.

Quarterback Nick Vidnovic
of North Carolina, safety
Buster Cox of Duke, linebacker
Nick Arcaro and fullback
Frank Harsh of Wake Forest
are this week's illustrations of
that fact.

Only Maryland end Don
Ratliff deviates from this
ever-be-coming weekly truth.
For their efforts, they were
named Players of the Week in
the ACC.

Vidnovic Is Virginia Native

Vidnovic, who hails from
Falls Church, Va., is one of the
many high school prospects
who decided to go to greener
pastures south of us rather
than to their own state
university.

Against his native school,
Vidnovic tossed two
touchdown passes and ran for
another six-pointer. In the first
period, the JEB Stuart
high-schooler threw five yards
to end Charles Waddell and in
the third quarter, he connected
with wingback Jimmy Jerome
on a 71 yard pass-run
touchdown play, in the Tar
Heels 23-3 victory over the
Cavaliers.

Duke safety Cox made 13
unassisted tackles in the Blue
Devils' loss to Wake Forest last
Saturday. In picking Cox as
the defensive backfield
standout, the selectors felt that
it was largely due to his efforts
that the Deacons didn't score
two or three more
touchdowns.

Arcaro from Princeton N.J.,
and Harsh, a Blairsville, Pa.
native, who is one of the Penn,
State rejects who didn't go to
Wahoo-land, led Wake in their
9-7 upset of Duke.

Harsh Rushes For 124 Yards

Rookie of the Week Harsh
gained 124 yards in the
triumph and linebacker Arcaro
aided in holding Duke to 47
aerial yards, and to 85 yards to
the Blue Devil runners other
than Steve Jones.

Split-end Ratliff was on the
receiving of a ten yard pass
from Bob Avellini which iced
the 31-6 mauling of Clemson.

His effective blocking helped
Terrapin rushers to grind out a
season-high 299 yards.
