Player Of The Week Scott Gardner

North Carolina State
quarterback Bruce Shaw and
offensive guard Ron Rusnak of
North Carolina were cited as
the ACC Offensive Players of
the Week for their stellar
performances this past
week-end.

Duke linebacker Winslow
Stillman and Maryland
defensive end Chris Cowdrey
were selected as the Defensive
Players of the Week.

Rookie of the Week honors
went to Cavalier quarterback
Scott Gardner for his play in
Virginia's win over VMI last
Saturday.

Shaw, a 6-2, 185 pound
junior who hails from
Richmond completed 14 of 27
passes for 294 yards and one
touchdown, a 56 yard pass
play with flanker Steve Lester
in the Wolfpack's 42-13
mauling of Wake Forest.

Shaw blossomed into a star
leader near the end of last
season and led State to upset
wins in two of their final three
outings.

Rusnak, considered one of
the finest blockers in Tar Heel
history, was second to
teammate Geof Hamlin in the
voting for the Jacobs Blocking
Trophy last year, and was a
first-string pre-season
All-America pick for Game
Plan Magazine.

An All-ACC pick last year,
Rusnak led his mates in
opening holes in the usually
stringent Kentucky defense
that allowed Carolina
ball-carriers to amass 354 yards
overland and 423 yards in total
offense in their 31-20 win.

Stillman came to Duke in
1969 on scholarship, but did
not play after his freshman
season. The 6-1, 220 pound
senior from Virginia Beach
came to the coaches this spring
and asked for a tryout.

Terrapin Cowdrey led a
defense which permitted
Villanova backs only nine yards
rushing for the game and a
minus 19 yards in the second
half in their 37-7 romp over
the Wildcats.

Over the last three halves,
Maryland has yielded only 30
yards rushing and 176 total
yards.

Cavalier first-year man Scott
Gardner named previously
Honorable Mention to the UPI
Backfield of the Week, was
chosen Rookie of the Week in
the ACC for his two
touchdown passes and his two
touchdown runs in his first
varsity action.

For his outstanding
performance against Oklahoma
State in which he passed for
355 yards with 20 completions
in 40 attempts, Virginia Tech's
Don Strock earned a spot on
the UPI Backfield of the Week
for the first time.

Strock's superb play came a
week after he passed over 500
yards in the Hokies' 27-27 tie
with Houston. This time his
prey was bigger as the Gobbler
upset nationally- ranked
Oklahoma State, 34-32.
