Cavalier Goalie Scott Peyton Shutout North Carolina, 2-0, Yesterday

Two first half goals off the
foot of center forward Jay
Meaney were more than
enough to power the resurgent
Cavalier soccer team to an
important 2-0 victory over
North Carolina yesterday in
Chapel Hill.

"After we got ahead we
settled down and played
basically a defensive game in
the second half," said Coach
Jim Stephens who went on to
note that "Jay had two clear
shots. Nobody was guarding
him and he just kicked them
right in. The second one almost
ripped the net apart. Their
goalie had no chance."

Ted Knetzger's pass set up
Meaney for the first score
while the second was an
unassisted effort. Tar Heel
netminder Eddie Berson was
credited with eight saves on the
afternoon with a like number
registered by Scott Peyton, his
second-year Cavalier

"Our fullbacks and goalie
both played well" remarked
Mr. Stephens, who employs a
four-fullback setup that's quite
common around the rest of the
world but rather unusual in the
United States. "The 4-3-3
formation is new for us this
year," Stephens elucidated,
"but right now it seems to be
working."

Virginia was able to keep
the ball out of Tar Heel hands
(feet?) for most of the contest
and really prevented the
Carolinians from mounting a
serious scoring threat.
