Sic Transit Parkhill

Tomorrow night in University Hall three
Virginia basketball players will play their last
games ever in front of the home fans when
the Cavaliers face Maryland. Special pre-game
ceremonies will be held to honor Barry
Parkhill, Jim Hobgood and Larry Gerry, so we
urge those with tickets to the sellout contest
to arrive early and participate.

Parkhill, of course, is the All-American
guard around whom Coach Bill Gibson was
able to build a winning team and an exciting
basketball program in a conference generally
recognized and being the nation's best. After
next week's ACC tournament, Parkhill will
leave the University with more than his share
of records and honors. He was, as Mr. Gibson
says, "Our first real superstar."

Hobgood, a co-captain of this year's team
with Parkhill, leaves as a two-year starter and
a man who proved that a 6-4 forward with a
deadly outside shot can play in the ACC.
Never as appreciated here as he was elsewhere
around the league, he can take well-earned
pride in the fact that there will be many in
the Carolinas and Maryland relieved at his
departure.

Gerry, a career substitute, followed his
older brother Bill here to play on the same
first-year team with Parkhill and Hobgood
four years ago. Knowing at the same time that
he would never start at Virginia and that he
could easily play regularly somewhere else
must have made his decision to stay difficult.

We would like to express our appreciation
and give out best wishes of good luck to the
three of them, as they all played important
parts in the University's current basketball
revival. Each more than earned his scholarship,
helping to put Virginia on the map of the
sports world.
